The Ritual Alignment System

model” in an attempt to make accurate detailed predictions, concerning specific rituals
NASA would carry out during future missions-the authors met, and began to have
extensive discussions regarding just what would constitute a “hit.”. As stated earlier, this
task was daunting, as we were faced with essentially “reverse-engineering” somebody
else’s most private metaphysics and religion—without access to any of the liturgy or texts.
Extending our previous metaphor with a well-known historical example:
it was akin to trying to figure out the beliefs of the early Christian Church, without
knowledge of what was on the Dead Sea scrolls …. In order for our model to obtain
widespread acceptance, we would have to use our knowledge and speculations about the
meaning of the alignments to make a prediction—not just about a past event, but also
about a future one. While we both rejected Dr. Van Flandern’s argument that an untested
past event was scientifically worthless, we realized his arguments would hold sway in the
anomalist community and with the public at large until we could deliver a successful a
priori prediction to his standards.
We agreed that the first task was to set down specific and tight criteria regarding a
“hit.” Fortunately, we had NASA’s past behavior to build on, so it was easy to sort out our
initial stellar candidates.
We agreed that the star Sirius, in the constellation Canis Major which, to the ancient
Egyptians, represented the goddess “Isis”—literally the “mother goddess of the world”
and the source of all life—would be a prime candidate.
Next, the three belt stars of Orion were an obvious fit; Orion/Osiris was the god of
“death, judgment and resurrection,” and the conveyor of science, astronomy, religion and
agriculture to the Egyptian people. The three prominent “belt stars” of Orion are the only
members of this constellation which figure into the equation of the ritual pattern. This is
for not only simplicity’s sake—for the simpler a model of such stellar motions the betterbut
also because the Egyptians held them in such a high regard, literally recreating the
belt pattern on the ground at Giza in the arrangement of the three great Pyramids.103
The third major figure in this pattern is the constellation Leo—evocative of the
Sphinx of Giza and representative to the Egyptians of the god “Horus,” son of Isis and
Osiris. Horus is also frequently associated with the planet Mars, and in fact the Sphinx
was at one time painted red, and they shared a name, “Hor-Dshr,” literally “Horus the
Red.”104 The major star in the Leonine constellation is Regulus, the blue-white “heart of the
lion.” It is the only star in this constellation that we focus on for the purposes of
determining our pattern.
We’d also decided, after the Pathfinder incident, to include some of the planets as
well. If a mission to Mars was launched at a time when Mars itself was at 19.5° above the
launch site, for instance, then it made sense that this ritual positioning would be
significant. This also made the positioning of Earth at 19.5° over the Pathfinder landing
site a “hit.” However, an alignment

of the Moon in a ritual position over the launch site would not be a hit, unless the mission
was to the Moon itself. There had to be appropriate context for a specific mythological or
physical association.
There were clear historical examples of this particular pattern being used by NASA.
In July, 1964, Ranger 7 became the first successful U.S. mission to travel to the
Moon. The Ranger series launched from Cape Canaveral on a direct impact trajectory
into the lunar surface—with their TV cameras activated and running only for the last few
minutes before impact.
As it launched, the Moon itself was exactly 33° below the horizon of the launch site,
and almost due West, in the realm of Osiris. At that same moment, at the impact site of
Ranger 7 in three days, Orion’s belt star Alnitak was exactly 19.5° above the impact site in
Mare Cognitum. Given what we know about the NASA ritual pattern and the Agency’s
capabilities with mission planning, this hardly seems a simply coincidental series of
We chose to exclude the constellation Taurus, which is associated with the evil god
Set, brother of Osiris, since it had not shown up in any of the alignment checks done to
that point. Even though Set is intertwined in the story of Isis, Osiris and Horus, he
seemed to have little significance in the NASA system, at least as far as we had decoded
it to this point.
So that’s it.
Except for the occasional addition of Mars or the Moon, or even the Earth (if we are
observing from the surface of another world), these five celestial bodies are the sum total
of the ritual objects that we would search the sky for.
This left us with the subject of “temples.”
While we agreed that the ideal fit would be the stars above a specific event site itself
(i.e. a landing site), we also had some evidence that alignments at various other
ceremonial locations -simultaneous with (and, in restricted cases, substitutions for) the
Primary Event—were significant to NASA as well.
For instance, Apollo 8′s lunar orbit insertion “match” had been over the Apollo 11
landing site, since fundamental celestial mechanics determined “where” on the Farside of
the Moon the SPS engine on Apollo 8 had to fire, to successfully decelerate the spacecraft
into lunar orbit; thus, the location or the stars above that point would not be “significant.”
But just what would constitute a “temple?”
One obvious candidate was the Apollo 12 landing site.

birthday). As it soft-landed on the Moon in Oceanus Procellarum at four minutes after
midnight GMT, the Moon itself was rising through 33° directly over the Jet Propulsion
Laboratory back in Pasadena—which was, of course, controlling the entire Mission.
With the discovery that this Apollo 12/Surveyor 3 site was, somehow, seen as
“sacred” long before any spacecraft actually touched down—as gauged by the stunningly
exact alignment of Orion on its lunar horizon, precisely as President Kennedy called for
“sending a man to the Moon” in May of 1961—it became increasingly obvious that a lot
of thought and planning had gone into selecting these “sacred temple sites” … and far, far
earlier than we had hitherto imagined.
After considerable discussion, we agreed on our own “reconstruction” of the
following “ritual temple” locations:
The Giza Plateau on Earth (for obvious reasons); the Apollo 11 (because it was the
location of the first manned landing) and Apollo 12 (because of the landing on Hitler’s
birthday and “the Kennedy Connection”) lunar landing sites; Viking 1 (because it was the
first NASA landing on the planet Mars); the Pathfinder landing sites (because of the 19.5°
x 33° location); and, of course, Cydonia (because of the Face and City Complex).
Next, we had to decide just what constituted a “ritual position.”
Since the NASA rituals seemed to be based in the ancient Egyptian system, we knew
we had to include significant celestial positions from that venerable religion. In the end,
our model would include only five key positions in the sky relative to elevation—i.e.
stellar altitude above or below the horizon.
They are the horizon (the zero point); 19.5° above and below the horizon; and 33°
above and below the horizon. Five simple positions.
We included star positions below the horizon because we know that the ancient
Egyptians were good enough astronomers to track the stellar motions even when they were
out of sight below the horizon, and NASA with its astronomy software certainly could track
these same motions. In terms of Right Ascension— essentially stellar longitude—the only
significant location is the meridian.
So effectively, in terms of stellar elevation, 95%—or 355 out of 360°—is off limits for a
“hit” at any one moment. In terms of lateral movements across the sky, fully 99% percent
of the sky (358 out of 360° of Right Ascension) is also out of play. Yet, still we are told the
alignments that we cite are “common.”

It is perhaps even more important to understand the symbolic significance of these
reference locations in the sky.
In the ancient Egyptian stellar religions, the horizon and the meridian were the most
significant; as noted previously, the horizon represented a sort of netherworld between
literal dimensions to the Egyptians—the “world of men” … and the “world of the gods.”
The meridian in Egyptian cosmology marked an object’s traverse from east to west in a
nocturnal rising and setting, symbolizing the daily birth and death of the sun.
The 19.5° and 33° positions are representative of the “hyperdimensional message” of

our modified system in a real world, “live fire exercise.” Fortunately for us, NASA was
about to provide us with the perfect opening….




Chapter 3
Fingerprints of a Lost Science

We saw that the Mercator World Map of 1569 included an accurate
portrayal of the coasts of Antarctica as they would have looked thousands
of years ago when they were free of ice. Interestingly enough, this same
map is considerably less accurate in its portrayal of another region, the
west coast of South America, than an earlier (1538) map also drawn by
The reason for this appears to be that the sixteenth-century geographer
based the earlier map on the ancient sources which we know he had at
his disposal, whereas for the later map he relied upon the observations
and measurements of the first Spanish explorers of western South
America. Since those explorers had supposedly brought the latest
information back to Europe, Mercator can hardly be blamed for following
them. In so doing the accuracy of his work declined: instruments capable
of finding longitude did not exist in 1569, but appear to have been used
to prepare the ancient source documents Mercator consulted to produce
his 1538 map.

The mysteries of longitude
Let us consider the problem of longitude, defined as the distance in
degrees east or west of the prime meridian. The current internationally
accepted prime meridian is an imaginary curve drawn from the North Pole
to the South Pole passing through the Royal Observatory at Greenwich,
London. Greenwich therefore stands at o° longitude while New York, for
example, stands at around 74° west, and Canberra, Australia, at roughly
150° east.

It would be possible to write an elaborate explanation of longitude and
of what needs to be done to fix it precisely for any given point on the
earth’s surface. What we are concerned with here, however, is not so
much technical detail as the accepted historical facts about humanity’s
growing knowledge of the mysteries of longitude. Among these facts, this
is the most important: until a breakthrough invention in the eighteenth
century, cartographers and navigators were unable to fix longitude with
any kind of precision. They could only make guesses which were usually
inaccurate by many hundreds of miles, because the technology had not
yet been developed to allow them to do the job properly.
Latitude north or south of the equator did not pose such a problem: it
could be worked out by means of angular measurements of the sun and
stars taken with relatively simple instruments. But to find longitude
equipment of an altogether different and superior calibre was needed,
which could combine position measurements with time measurements.
Throughout the span of known history the invention of such equipment
had remained beyond the capacities of scientists, but by the beginning of
the eighteenth century, with rapidly increasing sea traffic, a mood of
impatience and urgency had set in. In the words of an authority on the
period, ‘The search for longitude overshadowed the life of every man
afloat, and the safety of every ship and cargo. Accurate measurement
seemed an impossible dream and “discovering the longitude” had become
a stock phrase in the press like “pigs might fly”.
What was needed, above all else, was an instrument that would keep
the time (at the place of departure) with perfect accuracy during long sea
journeys despite the motion of the ship and despite the adverse
conditions of alternating heat and cold, wet and dry. ‘Such a Watch’, as
Isaac Newton told the members of the British government’s official Board
of Longitude in 1714, ‘hath not yet been made’.4
Indeed not. The timepieces of the seventeenth and early eighteenth
centuries were crude devices which typically lost or gained as much as a
quarter of an hour per day. By contrast, an effective marine chronometer
could afford to lose or gain that much only over several years.5
It was not until the 1720s that the talented English clockmaker John
Harrison began work on the first of a series of designs which resulted in
the manufacture of such a chronometer. His objective was to win the
prize of £20,000 offered by the Board of Longitude ‘for the inventor of
any means of determining a ship’s longitude within 30 nautical miles at
the end of a six weeks’ voyage’.6 A chronometer capable of fulfilling this
condition would have to keep time to within three seconds per day. It
took almost forty years, during which several prototypes were completed
and tested, before Harrison was able to meet these standards. Finally, in
1761, his elegant Chronometer No. 4 left Britain on board HMS Deptford
bound for Jamaica, accompanied by Harrison’s son William. Nine days
into the voyage, on the basis of longitude calculations made possible by
the chronometer, William advised the captain that they would sight the
Madeira Islands the following morning. The captain offered five to one
that he was wrong but agreed to hold the course. William won the bet.
Two months later, at Jamaica, the instrument was found to have lost just
five seconds.
Harrison had surpassed the conditions set by the Board of Longitude.
Thanks to the British government’s bureaucratic dithering, however, he
was not awarded the £20,000 prize money until three years before his
death in 1776. Understandably, it was only when he had the funds in his
hands that he divulged the secrets of his design. As a result of this delay,
Captain James Cook did not have the benefit of a chronometer when he
made his first voyage of discovery in 1768.8 By the time of his third
voyage, however (1778-9), he was able to map the Pacific with impressive
accuracy, fixing not only the correct latitude but the correct longitude of
every island and coastline.9 Henceforward, ‘thanks to Cook’s care and
Harrison’s chronometer … no navigator could have an excuse for failing
to find a Pacific island … or for being wrecked on a coastline appearing
from nowhere.
Indeed, with their accurate longitudes, Cook’s Pacific maps must be
ranked among the very first examples of the precise cartography of our
modern era. They remind us, moreover, that the making of really good
maps requires at least three key ingredients: great journeys of discovery;
first-class mathematical and cartographic skills; sophisticated
It was not until Harrison’s chronometer became generally available in
the 1770s that the third of these preconditions was fulfilled. This brilliant
invention made it possible for cartographers to fix longitude precisely,
something that the Sumerians, the Ancient Egyptians, the Greeks and the
Romans, and indeed all other known civilizations before the eighteenth
century were supposedly unable to do. It is therefore surprising and
unsettling to come across vastly older maps which give latitudes and
longitudes with modern precision.

Precision instruments
These inexplicably precise latitudes and longitudes are found in the same
general category of documents that contain the advanced geographical
knowledge I have outlined.
The Piri Reis Map of 1513, for example, places South America and
Africa in the correct relative longitudes,11 theoretically an impossible feat
for the science of the time. But Piri Reis was candid in admitting that his
map was based on far earlier sources. Could it have been from one of
these sources that he derived his accurate longitudes?
Also of great interest is the so-called ‘Dulcert Portulano’ of AD 1339
which focuses on Europe and North Africa. Here latitude is perfect across
huge distances and the total longitude of the Mediterranean and Black
Seas is correct to within half a degree.
Professor Hapgood comments that the maker of the original source
from which the Dulcert Portulano was copied had ‘achieved highly
scientific accuracy in finding the ratio of latitude to longitude. He could
only have done this if he had precise information on the relative
longitudes of a great many places scattered all the way from Galway in
Ireland to the eastern bend of the Don in Russia.’
The Zeno Map14 of AD 1380 is another enigma. Covering a vast area of
the north as far as Greenland, it locates a great many widely scattered
places at latitudes and longitudes which are ‘amazingly correct’.15 It is
‘unbelievable’, asserts Hapgood, ‘that anyone in the fourteenth century
could have found accurate latitudes for these places, to say nothing of
accurate longitudes’.
The Oronteus Finaeus World Map also commands attention: it
successfully places the coasts of Antarctica in correct latitudes and
relative longitudes and finds a remarkably accurate area for the continent
as a whole. This reflects a level of geographical knowledge not available
until the twentieth century.
The Portolano of lehudi Ibn Ben Zara is another map notable for its
accuracy where relative latitudes and longitudes are concerned.18 Total
longitude between Gibraltar and the Sea of Azov is accurate to half a
degree, while across the map as a whole average errors of longitude are
less than a degree.
These examples represent only a small fraction of the large and
challenging dossier of evidence presented by Hapgood. Layer upon layer,
the cumulative effect of his painstaking and detailed analysis is to
suggest that we are deluding ourselves when we suppose that accurate
instruments for measuring longitude were not invented until the
eighteenth century. On the contrary, the Piri Reis and other maps appear
to indicate very strongly that such instruments were re-discovered then,
that they had existed long ages before and had been used by a civilized
people, now lost to history, who had explored and charted the entire
earth. Furthermore, it seems that these people were capable not only of
designing and manufacturing precise and technically advanced
mechanical instruments but were masters of a precocious mathematical
The lost mathematicians
To understand why, we should first remind ourselves of the obvious: the
earth is a sphere. When it comes to mapping it, therefore, only a globe
can represent it in correct proportion. Transferring cartographic data
from a globe to flat sheets of paper inevitably involves distortions and
can be accomplished only by means of an artificial and complex
mechanical and mathematical device known as map projection.
There are many different kinds of projection. Mercator’s, still used in
atlases today, is perhaps the most familiar. Others are dauntingly
referred to as Azimuthal, Stereographic, Gnomonic, Azimuthal
Equidistant, Cordiform, and so on, but it is unnecessary to go into this
any further here. We need only note that all successful projections require
the use of sophisticated mathematical techniques of a kind supposedly
unknown in the ancient world20 (particularly in the deepest antiquity
before 4000 BC when there was allegedly no human civilization at all, let
alone one capable of developing and using advanced mathematics and
Charles Hapgood submitted his collection of ancient maps to the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology for evaluation by Professor Richard
Strachan. The general conclusion was obvious, but he wanted to know
precisely what level of mathematics would have been required to draw up
the original source documents. On 18 April 1965 Strachan replied that a
very high level of mathematics indeed would have been necessary. Some
of the maps, for example, seemed to express ‘a Mercator type projection’
long before the time of Mercator himself. The relative complexity of this
projection (involving latitude expansion) meant that a trigonometric
coordinate transformation method must have been used.
Other reasons for deducing that the ancient map-makers must have
been skilled mathematicians were as follows:
1 The determination of place locations on a continent requires at least geometric
triangulation methods. Over large distances (of the order of 1000 miles) corrections
must be made for the curvature of the earth, which requires some understanding of
spherical trigonometry.
2 The location of continents with respect to one another requires an understanding of
the earth’s sphericity, and the use of spherical trigonometry.
3 Cultures with this knowledge, plus the precision instruments to make the required
measurements to determine location, would most certainly use their mathematical
technology in creating maps and charts.’21
Strachan’s impression that the maps, through generations of copyists,
revealed the handiwork of an ancient, mysterious and technologically
advanced civilization, was shared by reconnaissance experts from the US
Airforce to whom Hapgood submitted the evidence. Lorenzo Burroughs,
chief of the 8th Reconnaissance Technical Squadron’s Cartographic
Section at Westover Air Base, made a particularly close study of the
Oronteus Finaeus Map. He concluded that some of the sources upon
which it was based must have been drawn up by means of a projection
similar to the modern Cordiform Projection. This, said Burroughs:
suggests the use of advanced mathematics. Further, the shape given to the
Antarctic Continent suggests the possibility, if not the probability, that the original
source maps were compiled on a stereographic or gnomonic type of projection
involving the use of spherical trigonometry.
We are convinced that the findings made by you and your associates are valid, and
that they raise extremely important questions affecting geology and ancient
Hapgood was to make one more important discovery: a Chinese map
copied from an earlier original on to a stone pillar in AD 1137.23 This map
incorporates precisely the same kind of high quality information about
longitudes as the others. It has a similar grid and was drawn up with the
benefit of spherical trigonometry. Indeed, on close examination, it shares
so many features with the European and Middle Eastern maps that only
one explanation seems adequate: it and they must have stemmed from a
common source.
We seem to be confronted once again by a surviving fragment of the
scientific knowledge of a lost civilization. More than that, it appears that
this civilization must have been at least in some respects as advanced as
our own and that its cartographers had ‘mapped virtually the entire globe
with a uniform general level of technology, with similar methods, equal
knowledge of mathematics, and probably the same sorts of

have been handed down—a legacy of inestimable value, in all probability
incorporating much more than sophisticated geographical knowledge.
Could it have been some portion of this legacy that was distributed in
prehistoric Peru by the so-called ‘Viracochas’, mysterious bearded
strangers said to have come from across the seas, in a ‘time of darkness’,
to restore civilization after a great upheaval of the earth?
I decided to go to Peru to see what I could find.



Chapter 7
Were There Giants Then?

Just after six in the morning the little train jerked into motion and began
its slow climb up the steep sides of the valley of Cuzco. The narrowgauge
tracks were laid out in a series of Z shapes. We chugged along the
lower horizontal of the first Z, then shunted and went backwards up the
oblique, shunted again and went forward along the upper horizontal—
and so on, with numerous stops and starts, following a route that
eventually took us high above the ancient city. The Inca walls and colonial
palaces, the narrow streets, the cathedral of Santo Domingo squatting
atop the ruins of Viracocha’s temple, all looked spectral and surreal in
the pearl-grey light of a dawn sky. A fairy pattern of electric lamps still
decorated the streets, a thin mist seeped across the ground, and the
smoke of domestic fires rose from the chimneys over the tiled roofs of
countless small houses.

Eventually the train turned its back on Cuzco and we proceeded for a
while in a straight north-westerly direction towards our destination:
Machu Picchu, the lost city of the Incas, some three hours and 130
kilometres away. I had intended to read, but lulled by the rocking motion
of the carriage, I dropped off to sleep instead. Fifty minutes later I awoke
to find that we were passing through a painting. The foreground, brightly
sunlit, consisted of flat green meadows sprinkled with little patches of
thawing frost, distributed on either side of a stream across a long, wide
In the middle of my view, dotted with bushes, was a large field on which
a handful of black and white dairy cows grazed. Nearby was a scattered
settlement of houses outside which stood small, dark-skinned Quechua
Indians dressed in ponchos, balaclavas and colourful woollen hats. More
distant were slopes canopied in fir trees and exotic eucalyptus. My eye
followed the rising contours of a pair of high green mountains, which
then parted to reveal folded and even more lofty uplands. Beyond these
soared a far horizon surmounted by a jagged range of radiant and snowy

Casting down the giants
It was with understandable reluctance that I turned at last to my reading.
I wanted to look more closely at some of the curious links I thought I had
identified connecting the sudden appearance of Viracocha to the deluge
legends of the Incas and other Andean peoples.
Before me was a passage from Fr. Jose de Acosta’s Natural and Moral
History of the Indies, in which the learned priest set out ‘what the Indians
themselves report of their beginning’:
They make great mention of a deluge, which happened in their country … The
Indians say that all men were drowned in the deluge, and they report that out of
Lake Titicaca came one Viracocha, who stayed in Tiahuanaco, where at this day
there are to be seen the ruins of ancient and very strange buildings, and from
thence came to Cuzco, and so began mankind to multiply …1
Making a mental note to find out more about Lake Titicaca, and the
mysterious Tiahuanaco, I read the following passage summarizing a
legend from the Cuzco area:
For some crime unstated the people who lived in the most ancient times were
destroyed by the creator … in a deluge. After the deluge the creator appeared in
human form from Lake Titicaca. He then created the sun and moon and stars.


After that he renewed the human population of the earth …
In another myth
The great Creator God, Viracocha, decided to make a world for men to live in. First
he made the earth and sky. Then he began to make people to live in it, carving
great stone figures of giants which he brought to life. At first all went well but
after a time the giants began to fight among themselves and refused to work.
Viracocha decided that he must destroy them. Some he turned back into stone …
the rest he overwhelmed with a great flood.3
Very similar notions were, of course, found in other, quite unconnected,
sources, such as the Jewish Old Testament. In Chapter six of the Book of
Genesis, for example, which describes the Hebrew God’s displeasure with
his creation and his decision to destroy it, I had long been intrigued by
one of the few descriptive statements made about the forgotten era
before the Flood. According to the enigmatic language of that statement,
‘There were giants in the earth in those days …’.4 Could the ‘giants’
buried in the biblical sands of the Middle East be connected in some
unseen way to the ‘giants’ woven into the fabric of pre-Colombian native
American legends? Adding considerably to the mystery was the fact that
the Jewish and Peruvian sources both went on, with many further details
in common, to depict an angry deity unleashing a catastrophic flood upon
a wicked and disobedient world.


On the next page of the sheaf of documents I had assembled was this

Inca account of the deluge handed down by a certain Father Molina in his
Relacion de las fabulas y ritos de los Yngas:
In the life of Manco Capac, who was the first Inca, and from whom they began to
boast themselves children of the Sun and from whom they derived their idolatrous
worship of the Sun, they had an ample account of the deluge. They say that in it
perished all races of men and created things insomuch that the waters rose above
the highest mountain peaks in the world. No living thing survived except a man
and a woman who remained in a box and, when the waters subsided, the wind
carried them … to Tiahuanaco [where] the creator began to raise up the people
and the nations that are in that region …

Garcilaso de la Vega, the son of a Spanish nobleman and an Inca royal
woman, was already familiar to me from his Royal Commentaries of the
Incas. He was regarded as one of the most reliable chroniclers of the
traditions of his mother’s people and had done his work in the sixteenth
century, soon after the conquest, when those traditions had not yet been
contaminated by foreign influences. He, too, confirmed what had
obviously been a universal and deeply impressed belief: ‘After the waters
of the deluge had subsided, a certain man appeared in the country of
Tiahuanaco …’6
That man had been Viracocha. Wrapped in his cloak, he was strong and
august of countenance’ and walked with unassailable confidence through
the most dangerous badlands. He worked miracles of healing and could
call down fire from heaven. To the Indians it must have seemed that he
had materialized from nowhere.


Ancient traditions

We were now more than two hours into our journey to Machu Picchu and
the panorama had changed. Huge black mountains, upon which not a
trace of snow remained to reflect the sunlight, towered darkly above us
and we seemed to be running through a rocky defile at the end of a
narrow valley filled with sombre shadows. The air was cold and so were
my feet. I shivered and resumed reading.
One thing was obvious amid the confused web of legends I had
reviewed, legends which supplemented one another but also at times
conflicted. All the scholars agreed that the Incas had borrowed, absorbed
and passed on the traditions of many of the different civilized peoples
over whom they had extended their control during the centuries of
expansion of their vast empire. In this sense, whatever the outcome of
the historical debate over the antiquity of the Incas themselves, nobody
could seriously dispute their role as transmitters of the ancient belief
systems of all the great archaic cultures—coastal and highland, known
and unknown—that had preceded them in this land.

And who could say just what civilizations might have existed in Peru in
the unexplored regions of the past? Every year archaeologists come up
with new finds which extend the horizons further and further back in
time. So why shouldn’t they one day discover evidence of the penetration
into the Andes, in remote antiquity, of a race of civilizers who had come
from overseas and gone away again after completing their work? That
was what the legends seemed to me to be suggesting, legends that most
of all, and most clearly, had immortalized the memory of the man/god
Viracocha striding the high windswept byways of the Andes working
miracles wherever he went:
Viracocha himself, with his two assistants, journeyed north … He travelled up the

cordillera, one assistant went along the coast, and the other up the edge of the
eastern forests … The Creator proceeded to Urcos, near Cuzco, where he
commanded the future population to emerge from a mountain. He visited Cuzco,
and then continued north to Ecuador. There, in the coastal province of Manta, he
took leave of his people and, walking on the waves, disappeared across the

There was always this poignant moment of goodbye at the end of every
folk memory featuring the remarkable stranger whose name meant ‘Foam
of the Sea’:
Viracocha went on his way, calling forth the races of men … When he came to the
district of Puerto Viejo he was joined by his followers whom he had sent on
before, and when they had joined him he put to sea in their company and they say
that he and his people went by water as easily as they had traversed the land.8
Always this poignant goodbye … and often a hint of science or magic.

17 – The Life of Earth


In the preceding chapters has been shown how the components were successively formed which make
up the so-called “lower nature of man” — the physical body, the ether body and the astral body. It has
also been described how, with the appearance of a new body, the old ones must always be
transformed so that they can become carriers and instruments of the one formed later. An advance of
human consciousness is also associated with this progress.
As long as the lower man has only a physical body, he possess merely an utterly dull consciousness,
which is not equivalent even to that of dreamless sleep of the present, although for man of today this
latter state of consciousness is in fact an “unconscious” one. In the time when the ether body appears,
man reaches the consciousness which is his today in dreamless sleep. With the formation of the astral
body a dim image consciousness makes its appearance, similar to, but not identical with the one man
at present ascribes to himself while he is dreaming. The fourth, the current condition of consciousness
of earth man, will now be described.
This present condition of consciousness develops in the fourth great universal era, that of earth which
follows the preceding Saturn, Sun, and Moon eras.
On Saturn the physical body of man was developed in several stages. At that time it could not have
been the carrier of an ether body. And the latter was added only during the course of the Sun.
Simultaneously, the physical body was so transformed in the successive Sun cycles that it could
become the carrier of this ether body, or in other words, that the ether body could work in the physical
During the Moon development the astral body was added, and again the physical body and the ether
body were transformed in such a way that they could provide suitable carriers and instruments for the
then appearing astral body. Thus, on the Moon, man is a being composed of physical body, ether
body, and astral body. Through the ether body he is enabled to feel joy and pain; through the astral
body he is a being with emotions, rage, hate, love and so forth.
As has been shown, higher spirits actively work on the different members of his being. On the Moon
the ether body received the capacity for joy and pain through the Spirits of Twilight; the emotions
were implanted in the astral body by the Fire Spirits.
At the same time, something else was taking place during the three great cycles on Saturn, Sun, and
Moon. During the last Saturn cycle the spirit man (Atma) was formed with the help of the Spirits of
Will (Thrones). During the penultimate Sun cycle, the life-spirit (Buddhi) was joined to it with the
assistance of the Cherubim.
During the third from the last Moon cycle, the spirit-self (Manas) united with the two others through
the help of the Seraphim. Thus actually two origins of man were formed during these three great
cycles: a lower man, consisting of physical body, ether body, and astral body, and a higher man,
consisting of spirit man (Atma), life-spirit (Buddhi), and spirit-self (Manas). The lower and the higher
nature of man followed separate paths at first.
The earth development serves to bring the two separate origins of man together.
But first, after the seventh small cycle, all of Moon existence enters a kind of sleeping state (Pralaya).
Thereby everything becomes mixed together, so to speak, in a homogeneous mass. The Sun and the
Moon too, which were separate in the last great cycle, again become fused during the last Moon
When everything again emerges from the sleeping state there must first be repeated in their essentials
the Saturn condition during a first small cycle, the Sun condition during a second, and the Moon cycle
during a third. During this third cycle the beings on the Moon, which has again been split off from the
Sun, resume approximately the same forms of existence which they already had on the Moon. There
the lower man is a being intermediate between man of today and an animal; the plants stand midway
between the animal and plant natures of today, and the minerals only half bear their lifeless character
of today, while for the rest they are still half plants.
During the second half of this third cycle something else is already in preparation. The minerals
harden, the plants gradually lose the animal character of their sensibility, and out of the uniform
species of animal man there develop two classes. One of these remains on the level of animality,
while the other is subjected to a division of the astral body into two parts. The astral body splits into a
lower part, which continues to be the carrier of the emotions, and a higher part, which attains to a
certain independence, so that it can exercise a kind of mastery over the lower members, over the
physical body, the ether body, and the lower astral body.
Now the Spirits of Personality seize upon this higher astral body and implant in it just that
independence we have mentioned, and therewith also selfishness. Only in the lower human astral
body do the Fire Spirits now accomplish their work, while in the ether body the Spirits of Twilight are
active, and in the physical body that power entity begins its work which one can describe as the real
ancestor of man. It is the same power entity which formed the spirit man (Atma) with the help of the
Thrones on Saturn, the life-spirit (Buddhi) with the assistance of the Cherubim on the Sun, and the
spirit-self (Manas) together with the Seraphim on the Moon.
But now this changes. Thrones, Cherubim, and Seraphim ascend to higher spheres, and the higher
man now receives the assistance of the Spirits of Wisdom, of Motion, and of Form. These are now
united with spirit-self, life-spirit, and spirit-man (with Manas-Buddhi-Atma). With the assistance of
these entities the human power being characterized above develops its physical body during the
second half of the third earth cycle. It is the Spirits of Form which act here in the most significant
way. They already form the human physical body so that it becomes a kind of precursor of the later
human body of the fourth cycle (the present one, or the fourth round)
In the astral body of the animal beings which have been left behind, it is exclusively the Fire Spirits
which remain active, while in the ether body of the plants it is the Spirits of Twilight. 0n the other
hand, the Spirits of Form participate in the transformation of the mineral realm. They make the latter
hard, that is, implant rigid and fixed forms in it.
One must not imagine, however, that the sphere of activity of the spirits we have mentioned was
confined only to what has been characterized. Always it is only the Main directions of their activities
which are meant, in a subordinate way all the spirit beings participate everywhere. Thus at the time
indicated, the Spirits of Form also have certain functions to perform in the physical plant and animal
bodies, and so forth.
After all this has taken place, around the end of the third earth cycle all the entities — including Sun
and Moon — again become fused and then pass through a shorter stage of sleep (a small Pralaya). At
that time everything is again a uniform mass (a chaos), and at the end of this stage the fourth earth
cycle begins in which we are at present.
At first, everything which already previously had had a being in the mineral, plant, animal, and human
realms, begins to separate out of the uniform mass in germinal form. First there can re-emerge as
independent germs only those human ancestors on whose higher astral bodies the Spirits of
Personality have worked in the preceding small cycle. All other beings of the mineral, plant, and
animal realm do not yet lead an independent existence here. At this stage everything is still in that
high spiritual condition which is called the “formless” or Arupa condition.
At the present stage of development, only the highest human thoughts — for example, mathematical
and moral ideals — are woven of that substance which was proper to all beings at the stage we are
describing. That which is lower than these human ancestors can only appear as an activity in a higher
being. The animals exist only as states of consciousness of the Spirits of Fire, the plants as states of
consciousness of the Spirits of Twilight. The minerals have a double existence in thought. First they
exist as thought germs in the human ancestors mentioned above, then as thoughts in the consciousness
of the Spirits of Form. The “higher man” (spirit-man, life-spirit, spirit-self also exists in the
consciousness of the Spirits of Form.
By degrees a densification of everything now occurs. But at the next stage, the density as yet does not
exceed the density of thoughts. At this stage, however, the animal beings which originated in the
preceding cycle, can emerge. They separate out of the consciousness of the Fire Spirits and become
independent thought beings. This stage is called that of the “formed” or Rupa condition. Man
advances in it insofar as his previously formless, independent thought body is clothed by the Spirits of
Form in a body of coarser, formed thought substance. The animals as independent beings, here consist
exclusively of this substance.
Now a further densification takes place. The condition which is now attained can be compared with
that out of which the conceptions of the dreamlike image consciousness are woven. One calls this the
“astral” stage.
The human ancestor again advances. In addition to the other two components, his being receives a
body which consists of the substance just characterized. He now has the inner formless core of being,
a thought body, and an astral body. The animals receive a similar astral body, and the plants emerge
from the consciousness of the Spirits of Twilight as independent astral entities.
In the further course of the development, the densification now advances to that condition which is
called physical. At first we deal with the most refined physical condition, with that of the most refined
ether. From the Spirits of Form the human ancestor receives the most refined ether body as an
addition to his earlier components. He consists of a formless thought core, a formed thought body, an
astral body, and an ether body.
The animals have a formed thought body, an astral body, and an ether body; the plants have an astral
and an ether body; the minerals first emerge here as independent ether forms. At this stage of
development we are concerned with four realms: a mineral, a plant, an animal, and a human realm.
Along with these however, in the course of the development up to this point three other realms have
come into existence.
In the time when the animals separated from the Fire Spirits at the thought stage (Rupa stage), the
Spirits of Personality also separated certain entities out of themselves. These consist of indefinite
thought substance which gathers together, dissolves in a cloudlike manner, and thus flows along. One
cannot speak of them as of independent entities, but only of an irregular, general mass. This is the first
elementary realm. At the astral stage something similar separates from the Fire Spirits. It consists of
shadowy images or phantoms similar to the conceptions of the dreamlike image consciousness. They
form the second elementary realm. In the beginning of the physical stage, indefinite image-like
entities finally separate out of the Spirits of Twilight.
They too have no independence, but they can manifest forces which are similar to the passions and
emotions of men and animals. These non-independent, buzzing emotions form the third elementary
realm. For beings which are endowed with a dreamlike image consciousness, or with conscious image
consciousness, these creations of the third elementary realm are perceptible as a flooding light, as
flakes of color, as smell, taste, as various tones and sounds, but all such perceptions must be imagined
to be phantom-like.
One must therefore imagine the earth, when it condenses as a refined etheric body out of its astral
precursor, to be a conglomerate of an etheric mineral basic mass and of etheric plant, animal, and
human beings. Filling the interstices as it were, and also permeating the other beings, are the creatures
of the elementary realms.
This earth is inhabited by the higher spiritual entities, which, in the most diverse ways, are active in
the realms we have mentioned. They form a spirit community, so to speak, a spirit state, and their
dwelling-place and workshop is the earth, which they carry with them as a snail does its shell. In all
this it must be borne in mind that what today is separated from the earth as Sun and Moon, is still
entirely united with the earth. Only later do both heavenly bodies separate from the earth.
The “higher man” (spirit-man, life-spirit, spirit-self, Atma-Buddhi-Manas) has as yet no independence
at this stage. He still constitutes a member of the spirit state, and for the time being is bound to the
Spirits of Form, as a human hand is bound to a human organism as a dependent member.
With this we have followed the formation of the earth to the beginning of its physical condition. In
what follows, we shall show how everything in this condition develops further. The previous
development will then pass over into what has already been said in preceding chapters of the Akasha
Chronicle about the progress of earth.
States of development such as those which have been mentioned here as a formless, a formed, an
astral, and a physical condition, which thus constitute differences in a smaller cycle (a round), are
called “globes” in theosophical texts. In this respect one therefore speaks of an Arupa, a Rupa, an
astral and a physical globe.
Some have considered such a designation incorrect. But here we shall not speak further of matters of
nomenclature. Indeed, it is not names which are important, but rather the things themselves. It is better
to endeavor to describe the latter as well as possible than to worry very much about names. These
must after all always be incorrect in a certain sense. For to facts of the spiritual world one must give
names which have come from the world of the senses, and therefore one can speak only by way of
The description of the development of the world of man has been brought to the point where the earth
reaches the beginning of its physical densification. One should now represent to oneself the condition
of development of this world of man at this stage. What later appears as sun, moon, and earth is still
united in a single body.
This body possesses only refined etheric matter. It is only within this matter that the beings which
later will appear as men, animals, plants, and minerals have their existence, For the further progress of
the development, the one heavenly body must first separate into two, of which one becomes the later
sun, while the other contains the later earth and the later moon in a still united form. Only later does a
process of division also take place in this latter heavenly body; that which becomes the present-day
moon is extruded, and the earth alone remains as the dwelling-place of man and of his fellowcreatures.
The student of ordinary theosophical literature should understand clearly that the separation of the one
heavenly body into two took place in the period in which this literature places the development of the
so-called second principal human race. The human ancestors of this race are described as forms with
refined etheric bodies. But one must not imagine that they could have developed on our present earth
after it had already separated itself from the sun and had expelled the moon. After this separation,
such etheric bodies were no longer possible.
If one follows the development of mankind in that cycle to which our description has now come, and
which leads us into the present, one becomes aware of a series of principal conditions, of which our
current one is the fifth.
The preceding expositions from the Akasha Chronicle have already dealt with these conditions. Here
we shall only repeat what is necessary for a further deepening of the discussion.
The first principal condition shows the human ancestors as highly refined etheric entities. The usual
theosophical literature somewhat inexactly calls these entities the first principal race. This condition
essentially continues during the second epoch, in which this literature places the second principal race.
Until this stage of development sun, moon, and earth are still one heavenly body. Now the sun splits
off as an independent body.
It thereby takes those forces through which the human ancestors could be maintained in their etheric
condition. With the splitting-off of the sun a densification of the human forms and also of the forms of
man’s fellow-creatures takes place. These creatures must now adapt themselves to their new dwellingplace,
as it were.
But it is by no means only the material forces which are taken away from this dwelling-place.
Spiritual entities, of whom it has been said that they formed a spirit community on the one heavenly
body we have described, also leave at the same time. Their existence remains more intimately
connected with the sun then with the heavenly body which the sun has thrust out from itself. If these
entities had remained united with the forces which later develop on the earth and on the moon, they
themselves could not have developed further to their appropriate levels.
They needed a new dwelling-place for this further development. This is provided for them by the sun
after it — so to speak — has cleansed itself of the earth and moon forces. At the stage at which these
beings now are, they can act on earth and moon forces only from the outside, from the sun.
One can see the reason for the separation we have described. Until this time, certain entities which are
higher than man have gone through their development on the one heavenly body characterized above;
they now lay claim to a part of it for themselves, and leave the rest to man and his fellow-creatures.
The consequence of the splitting-off of the sun was a radical revolution in the development of man
and of his fellow-creatures. They fell as it were from a higher level of existence to a lower. They had
to do this, for they lost the immediate connection with those higher beings. They would have entered
entirely into a blind alley in their own development if other universal events had not taken place,
through which progress was stimulated anew and the development directed into quite different
With the forces which at present are united in the split-off moon, and which at that time were still
within the earth, further progress would have been impossible. Present-day mankind could not have
been produced with these forces, but, instead, only a kind of being in which the emotions of rage, hate
and so forth, developed during the third great cycle, the Moon existence, would have increased to the
point of the immoderate and animal.
During a certain period, this was in fact the case. The immediate consequence of the splitting-off of
the sun was the arising of the third principal condition of the ancestors of man, which in theosophical
literature is designated as the third principle race, the Lemurian. Again, the designation “race” for this
condition of development is not an especially fortunate one. For in a real sense, the human ancestors
of that time cannot be compared with what today one designates as “race.” One must be completely
clear about the fact that the evolutionary forms of the distant past as well as of the future are so
entirely different from those of today that our present appellations can only serve as makeshifts, and
really lose all meaning in relation to these remote epochs.
Actually, one can only begin to speak of “races” in connection with the development attained in about
the second third of the third principal condition identified above (the Lemurian). Only then is formed
what today one calls “races.” This “racial character” is retained in the period of the Atlantean
development, and further into our time of the fifth principal condition. But already at the end of our
fifth era, the word “race” will again lose all sense. In future, mankind will be divided into parts which
it will be impossible to designate as “races.”
In this respect, ordinary theosophical literature has caused much confusion. This has especially been
done by Sinnett’s Esoteric Buddhism, the book which, on the other hand, has the great merit of having
been the first to popularize the theosophical world-outlook in recent times. In this book the universal
development is described as if, throughout the cosmic cycles, the “races” forever repeated themselves
in the same way. But this is by no means the case. That which deserves to be called “race” also comes
into being and perishes. One should only use the expression “race” for a certain span in the
development of mankind. Before and after this, there are evolutionary forms which are something
totally different from “races.”
Only because the true deciphering of the Akasha Chronicle fully authorizes one to make such a
remark have we presumed to make it here. In this the decipherer knows himself to be in complete
accord with true occult spiritual investigation. Otherwise it could never occur to him to make such
objections against the meritorious books of theosophical literature. He might also make the really
quite superfluous remark that the inspirations of the great teachers mentioned in Esoteric Buddhism
are not contradicted by what has been described here, but that the misunderstanding has only been
produced by the fact that the author of that book has transposed the wisdom of these inspirations,
which is difficult to express, into modern every-day human language, in his own way.
The third principal condition of the development of mankind presents itself as the one in which the
“races” first came into being. This event was brought about by the separation of the moon from the
earth. This separation was accompanied by the originating of the two sexes. This stage of the
development of mankind has been repeatedly referred to in the descriptions from the “Akasha
Chronicle.” When the earth, still united with the moon, split off from the sun, a male and a female sex
did not as yet exist within mankind. Each human being combined the two sexes within its still highly
refined body.
It must be remembered however that these double-sexed human ancestors were on a low level of
development as compared with present-day man. The lower impulses acted with immeasurable
energy, and nothing of a spiritual development as yet existed. That the latter was stimulated and that
thereby the lower impulses were confined within certain bounds, is connected with the fact that, at the
same time at which earth and moon separated, the former came into the sphere of influence of other
heavenly bodies. This extremely significant co-operation of the earth with other heavenly bodies, its
meeting with foreign planets, in the time which theosophical literature calls the Lemurian, will be
related in a further chapter of the “Akasha Chronicle.”
The same course of development will be described once more, but from a different point of view. This
is done for a quite definite reason. One can never look at the truths about the higher worlds from too
many aspects. One should realize that from any one aspect it is possible to give only the poorest
sketch. And when one looks at the same thing from the most diverse aspects, the impressions one
receives in this way only gradually complement each each other to form an ever more animated
picture. Only such pictures, not dry, schematic concepts, can help the man who wants to penetrate into
the higher worlds. The more animated and colorful the pictures, the more can one hope to approach
the higher reality.
It is obvious that it is just the pictures from the higher worlds which arouse mistrust in many today. A
person is quite content to be given conceptual schemes and classifications — with as many names as
possible — of Devachan, of the development of the planets, and so forth; but he becomes more
difficult when somebody presumes to describe the supersensible worlds as a traveller describes the
landscapes of South America. Yet one should realize that it is only through fresh, animated pictures
that one is given something useful, not through dead schemes and names.

13 – The Earth and Its Future
The fourth principal stage of human development is lived on earth. This is that condition of
consciousness in which man finds himself at present. But before he attained it, he, and with him the
whole earth, first had to repeat successively the Saturn, Sun, and Moon stages in three smaller cycles
(the so-called “rounds” of theosophical literature).
Man now lives in the fourth earth cycle. He has already advanced a little past the middle of this cycle.
At this stage of consciousness man no longer perceives in a dreamlike manner the images which arise
in his soul through the influence of his environment only, but objects appear to him “outside in space.”
On the Moon and also during the stages of repetition on earth, there arose for example, a colored
image in his soul when a particular object came near him. All of consciousness consisted of such
images, tones, and so forth, which flowed and ebbed in the soul. Only with the appearance of the
fourth condition of consciousness does color no longer appear merely in the soul, but on an external,
spatially circumscribed object; sound is no longer merely an inner reverberating of the soul, but the
resounding of an object in space.
In mystery science therefore, one also calls this fourth, the earthly condition of consciousness, the
“objective consciousness.” It has been formed slowly gradually in the course of development in the
way that the physical organs of sense slowly arose and thus made perceptible the most diverse sensory
qualities in external objects.
Apart from the senses which are already developed, others exist in an as yet germinal state which will
become fully developed in the subsequent earth period, and which will show the world of the senses
in a diversity still greater than is the case today. The gradual growth of this earth consciousness has
been described in the preceding pages, and in the discussions which are to follow this description will
be amplified and supplemented in essential points.
The colored world, the sounding world, and so forth, which earlier man had perceived within himself,
confronts him outside in space during his life on earth. But on the other hand, a new world appears
within him: the world of ideas or thoughts. One cannot speak of ideas and thoughts in relation to the
Moon consciousness. The latter consists solely of the images we have described.
Around the middle of the development of earth — although this state of affairs was already preparing
itself at a somewhat earlier time — there developed in man the capacity to form ideas and thoughts
about objects. This capacity constitutes the basis for memory and for self-consciousness. Only
conceptualizing man can develop a memory of that which he has perceived; and only thinking man
reaches the point where he differentiates himself from his environment as an independent, selfconscious
being, where he recognizes himself as an “I.” The first three stages we have described were
stages of consciousness; the fourth is not only consciousness, but self-consciousness.
But within the self-consciousness, the present-day life of thoughts, there is already developing a
disposition toward still higher states of consciousness. Man will live through these states of
consciousness on the next planets into which the earth will change after its present form. It is not
absurd to say something about these future conditions of consciousness, and therewith about life on
the following planets.
For in the first place, the clairvoyant — for certain reasons which are to be given elsewhere — strides
ahead of his fellows in his development. Thus those states of consciousness which all of mankind
must attain with the advance of planetary development are already developing in him at this time. In
the consciousness of the clairvoyant one finds an image of the future stages of mankind. Moreover,
the three subsequent conditions of consciousness are now already present in all men in germinal
states; and clairvoyant research has means for indicating what will emerge from these germinal states.
When it is said that the clairvoyant is already developing in himself the states of consciousness to
which in future all of mankind will advance, this must be understood with one restriction. The
clairvoyant, for example, is developing a seeing in the spiritual world today which in future will
appear in man in a physical way. But this future physical condition of man will be a faithful likeness
of the corresponding contemporary spiritual one in the clairvoyant.
The earth itself is going to develop, and therefore quite different forms from those which exist today
will appear in its future physical inhabitants; but these physical forms are being prepared in the
spiritual and mental ones of today. For example, what the clairvoyant today sees in the form of a
cloud of light and color around the human physical body as a so-called “aura,” will later change into a
physical form; and other organs of sense than those of today will give the man of the future the
capacity to perceive other forms.
However, already today the clairvoyant sees the spiritual models of the later material entities with his
spiritual senses (thus for example, the aura). A view into the future is possible for him, although it is
very difficult to give an idea of the character of this view through the language of today and for
present-day human conceptions.
The conceptions of the present state of consciousness are shadowy and pale in comparison with the
colorful and sounding objects of the external world. Man therefore speaks of conceptions as of
something which is “not real.” A “mere thought” — is contrasted with an object or a being which is
“real” because it can be perceived through the senses. But conceptions and thoughts bear within
themselves the potentiality of again becoming real and image-like. If man speaks of the conception
“red” today without having a red object before him, then this conception is, as it were, only a shadow
image of real “redness.”
Later, man will reach the point where he can not only let the shadowy conception of the “red” arise in
his soul, but where, when he thinks “red,” “red” will actually be before him. He will be able to create
images, not merely conceptions. Thereby something will be achieved by him similar to that which
already existed for the Moon consciousness. But the images will not ebb and flow in him like dreams;
instead he will evoke them in full self-consciousness, as he does today’s conceptions. The thought of a
color will be the color itself; the conception of a sound will be the sound itself, and so forth. In the
future, a world of images will flow and ebb in the soul of man through his own power, whereas during
the Moon existence such a world of images filled him without his acting.
In the meantime the spatial character of the objective external world will not disappear. The color
which arises together with the conception of color will not be merely an image in the soul but will
appear in outside space. The consequence of this will be that man will be able to perceive beings and
objects of a higher kind than those of his present environment. These are objects and beings which are
of a more delicate spiritual and soul nature, hence they do not clothe themselves in the objective
colors which are perceptible to the present physical sense organs; however, these are objects and
beings which will reveal themselves through the more delicate spiritual and mental colors and sounds
which the man of the future will be able to create from his soul.
Man is approaching a condition in which he will have a self-conscious image consciousness*
appropriate for such perceptions. On the one hand, the coming development of earth will raise the
present life of conceptions and thoughts to an ever higher, more delicate, and more perfect condition;
on the other hand, the self-conscious image consciousness will gradually develop itself during this
The latter, however, will attain full life in man only on the next planet into which the earth will
transform itself, and which is called “Jupiter” in mystery science. Then man will be able to enter into
intercourse with beings which are completely hidden from his present sensory perception. It will be
understood that not only does the life of perception thereby become totally different, but that actions,
feelings, and all relations to the environment, are completely transformed. While today man can
consciously influence only sensory beings, he will then be able to act consciously on very different
forces and powers; he himself will receive what to him will be fully recognizable influences from very
different realms than at present.
At that stage there can no longer be any question of birth and death in the present sense. For “death”
occurs only because the consciousness has to depend on an external world with which it enters into
communication through the physical sense organs. When these physical sense organs fail, every
relation to the environment ceases. That is to say, the man “has died.” However, when his soul is so
far advanced that it does not receive the influences of the outside world through physical instruments,
but receives them through the images which the soul creates out of itself, then it will have reached the
point where it can regulate its intercourse with the environment independently, that is, its life will not
be interrupted against its will. It has become lord over birth and death. All this will come to be with
the developed self-conscious image consciousness on “Jupiter.” This state of the soul is also called the
“psychic consciousness.”
The next condition of consciousness to which man develops on a further planet, “Venus,” is
distinguished from the previous one by the fact that the soul can now create not only images, but also
objects and beings. This occurs in the self-conscious object consciousness or supra-psychic
consciousness. Through the image consciousness man can perceive something of supersensible beings
and objects, and he can influence them through the awakening of his image conceptions. But in order
for that to take place which he desires of such a supersensible being, at his instigation, this being must
use its own forces. Thus man is the ruler over images, and he can produce effects through these
images. But he is not yet lord over the forces themselves. When his self-conscious object
consciousness is developed, he will also be ruler over the creative forces of other worlds. He will not
only perceive and influence beings, but he himself will create.
This is the course of the development of consciousness: at first it begins dimly; one perceives nothing
of other objects and beings, but only the inner experiences (images) of one’s own soul; then perception
is developed. At last the perceptive consciousness is transformed into a creative one. Before the
condition of earth goes over into the life of Jupiter — after the fourth earthly cycle — there are three
more smaller cycles to be passed through. These serve for the further perfection of the consciousness
of earth in a manner to be described in the following essays, when the development of the smaller
cycles and of their subdivisions will be described for all seven planets. When, after a period of rest
(Pralaya), earth has changed into Jupiter, and when man has arrived on the latter planet, then the four
preceding conditions — Saturn, Sun, Moon, and earth condition — must again be repeated during
four smaller cycles; and only during the fifth cycle of Jupiter does man attain the stage which has been
described above as the real Jupiter consciousness. In a corresponding manner does the “Venus
consciousness” appear during the sixth cycle of Venus.
A fact which will play a certain role in the following essays will be briefly indicated here. This
concerns the speed with which the development on the different planets takes place. For this is not the
same on all the planets. Life proceeds with the greatest speed on Saturn, the rapidity then decreases on
the Sun, becomes still less on the Moon and reaches its slowest phase on the earth. On the latter it
becomes slower and slower, to the point at which self-consciousness develops. Then the speed
increases again.
Therefore, today man has already passed the time of the greatest slowness of his development. Life
has begun to accelerate again. On Jupiter the speed of the Moon, on Venus that of the Sun will again
be attained. The last planet which can still be counted among the series of earthly transformations, and
hence follows Venus, is called “Vulcan” by mystery science. On this planet the provisional goal of the
development of mankind is attained. The condition of consciousness into which man enters there is
called “piety” or spiritual consciousness. Man will attain it in the seventh cycle of Vulcan after a
repetition of the six preceding stages.
Not much can be publicly communicated about the life on this planet. In mystery science one speaks
of it in such a way that it is said, “No soul which, with its thinking is still tied to a physical body,
should reflect about Vulcan and its life.” That is, only the mystery students of the higher order, who
may leave their physical body and can acquire supersensible knowledge outside of it, can learn
something about Vulcan.
The seven stages of consciousness are thus expressed in the course of the development of mankind in
seven planetary developments. At each stage, the consciousness must now pass through seven
subordinate conditions. These are realized in the smaller cycles already mentioned. (In theosophical
writings these seven cycles are called “rounds.”)
These subordinate states are called “conditions of life” by the mystery science of the Occident, in
contrast with the super-ordinated “conditions of consciousness.” Or, one says that each condition of
consciousness moves through seven “realms.” According to this calculation, one must distinguish
seven times seven in the whole development of mankind, that is, forty-nine small cycles or “realms”
(according to common theosophical usage, “rounds”). And again, each small cycle has to pass through
seven yet smaller ones, which are called “conditions of form” (in theosophical language, “globes”).
For the full cycle of humanity this amounts to seven times forty-nine or three hundred and forty-three
different “conditions of form.”
The following discussions which deal with this development, will show that a survey of the whole is
not as complicated as might at first appear at the mention of the number three hundred and forty-three.
It will become apparent how man can only truly understand himself when he knows his own

12 – On the Origin of the Earth
As individual man has to pass through different stages after his birth, as he must ascend from infancy
through childhood and so on to the age of the mature adult, so too must mankind as a whole go
through a similar process. Humanity has developed to its present condition by passing through other
stages. With the methods of the clairvoyant one can discern three principal stags of this development
of mankind which were passed through before the formation of the earth took place and before this
sphere became the scene of that development.
Therefore at present we are concerned with the fourth stage in the great universal life of man. For now
we shall relate the relevant facts here. The deeper explanation will appear in the course of the
description, insofar as is possible in the words of ordinary language, that is, without having recourse
to the form of expression of mystery science.
Man existed before there was an earth. But one must not imagine — as has already been suggested —
that perhaps he had previously lived on other planets and then at a certain time migrated to earth.
Rather, the earth has developed together with man. Just as man has passed through three main stages
of development, so has the earth, before becoming that which one now calls “earth.” For the time
being, as has been indicated above, one must completely liberate oneself from the significance which
contemporary science connects with the names “Saturn,” “Sun,” and “Moon,” if one wants to see the
explanations of the scientist of the spirit in this area in their proper light. For the present one should
connect with these names no other significance than that directly given to them in the following
Before the heavenly body on which the life of man takes place became “earth,” it had had three other
forms which one designates as Saturn, Sun, and Moon. On can thus speak of four planets on which the
four principal stages of the development of mankind take place Moon, before that Sun, and yet earlier,
Saturn. One is justified, as will appear from the following communications, to assume three further
principal stages which the earth, or better the heavenly body which developed into the present earth,
still has to pass through. In mystery science these have been named Jupiter, Venus, and Vulcan. Thus
the heavenly body with which human destiny is connected has passed through three stages in the past
is now in its fourth, and will in the future have to pass through three more until all the talents which
man has within himself are developed, until he arrives at the peak of his perfection.
One must realize that the development of man and of his heavenly body does not proceed as gradually
as for instance the passage of an individual human being through infancy, adolescence and so forth,
where one condition goes over into another more or less imperceptibly. Rather there are certain
interruptions. The Saturn condition does not go over immediately into the Sun stage. Between Saturn
development and Sun development, and similarly between the subsequent forms of the heavenly body
inhabited by man, there are intermediate conditions which can be compared with the night between
two days or with the sleeplike condition of a plant seed before it again develops into a full plant.
In imitation of oriental descriptions of this state of affairs, contemporary theosophy calls a stage of
development in which life is externally furthered, Manvantara, the intermediate condition of rest,
Pralaya. In accordance with the usage of European mystery science, one can use the word “open
cycle” for the former condition, and on the other hand, “hidden or closed cycle” for the latter. But
other designations are also in common use. Saturn, Sun, Moon, earth, and so forth, are “open cycles,”
and the periods of rest between them are “closed” ones.
It would be quite erroneous to think that in the periods of rest all life is extinct, although today this
idea can be encountered in many theosophical circles. Just as little as man ceases to live during his
sleep, so little does his life and that of his heavenly body become extinct during a “closed cycle”
(Pralaya). It is only that the conditions of life in the periods of rest cannot be perceived with the senses
which have been developed during the “open cycles,” just as during his sleep man does not perceive
what is taking place around him. Why one uses the expression “cycle” for the stages of development
will become sufficiently clear in the course of the following discussion. Only later can we speak about
the enormous periods of time which are required for these “cycles.”
One can find a thread through the course of the cycles by following for a moment the development of
human consciousness through them. Everything else can suitably arise out of this consideration of
The consciousness which man develops during his life-course on earth will be called — in accordance
with European mystery science — the “clear consciousness of day.” The latter consists in the fact that
through his present senses, man perceives the things and beings of the world and that he forms
conceptions and ideas concerning these things and beings with the help of his understanding and of
his reason. He then acts in the world of the senses according to these perceptions, conceptions, and
ideas. Man formed this consciousness only in the fourth principal stage of his cosmic development; on
Saturn, Sun, and Moon it did not yet exist. There he lived in other conditions of consciousness. As a
result, one can describe the three previous stages of development as the unfolding of lower conditions
of consciousness.
The lowest condition of consciousness was passed through during the Saturn development; the Sun
condition is higher, then follows the Moon consciousness and finally that of earth.
These former consciousnesses are primarily distinguished from the earthly one by two characteristics:
by the degree of clarity, and by the area over which the perception of man extends.
The Saturn consciousness has the lowest degree of clarity. It is entirely dull. It is difficult to give an
exact idea of this dullness, since even the dullness of sleep is somewhat clearer than this
consciousness. In abnormal, so-called deep states of trance, modem man can still fall back into this
state of consciousness.
The clairvoyant in the sense of mystery science can also form a correct conception of it. But by no
means does he himself live in this state of consciousness. On the contrary, he ascends to a much
higher one, which however in certain respects is similar to the original one. In the ordinary man at the
contemporary terrestrial stage, this condition, through which he once passed, has been effaced by the
“clear consciousness of day.” The “medium” who falls into a deep trance, however, is transported
back into it, so that he perceives in the same way in which all men perceived during the “Saturn
Either during the trance or after awaking, such a medium can then tell of experiences which are
similar to those of the Saturn stage. One must be careful to say that they are “similar,” not “identical,”
for the events which took place on Saturn are once and for all past; only events which have a certain
affinity with them still take place in the environment of man. These can only be perceived by a
“Saturn consciousness.”
Like the medium, the clairvoyant in the above sense acquires such a Saturn consciousness, but in
addition to it he keeps his “clear consciousness of day,” which man did not yet have on Saturn, and
which the medium loses in the state of trance. Such a clairvoyant is not in the Saturn consciousness
itself, but he can form a conception of it.
While this Saturn consciousness is by some degrees inferior to the one of today with respect to clarity,
it is superior to the latter with respect to the extent of what it can perceive. In its dullness it can not
only perceive everything which takes place on its own heavenly body down to the last detail, but it
can also observe the objects and beings on other heavenly bodies which are connected with Saturn.
It can also exercise a certain influence on these objects and beings. (It hardly need be said that this
observation of other heavenly bodies is quite different from that which contemporary man can
undertake by means of his scientific astronomy. This astronomical observation is based on the “clear
consciousness of day” and therefore perceives other heavenly bodies from the outside. The Saturn
consciousness, on the other hand, is immediate sensation, an experiencing of what takes place on
other heavenly bodies. One does not speak altogether accurately, but still fairly so, if one says that an
inhabitant of Saturn experienced objects and events of other heavenly bodies — and of his own — as
a man of today experiences his heart and his heartbeat or something similar in his own body.)
This Saturn consciousness developed slowly. As the first principal stage in the development of
mankind it passed through a series of subordinate stages, which in European mystery science are
called “small cycles.” In theosophical literature it has become customary to call these “small cycles,”
“rounds,” and their further sub-divisions — still smaller cycles — “globes.” These subordinate cycles
will be dealt with in subsequent discussions. For the sake of greater clarity, we shall first follow here
the principal stages of development. For the moment we shall speak only of man, although the
development of subordinate and superior entities and objects proceeds concurrently with his own.
That which concerns the development of other entities will then follow the discussion of man’s

periods (a Pralaya) mentioned above. After this there developed out of the heavenly body of man what
in mystery science is called the “Sun.” On the Sun, the human beings again emerged from their sleep.
The previously developed Saturn consciousness was present in them as a predisposition. First they
again developed it from this germ. One can say that on the Sun man repeated the condition of Saturn
before ascending to a higher one. However, it is not a simple repetition which is meant here, but one
in another form. These transformations of forms will be discussed later when we deal with the smaller
cycles. At that time the differences between the individual “repetitions” will also become apparent.
Now we shall describe only the development of consciousness.

After the repetition of the Saturn condition, the “Sun consciousness” of man appears. This is
somewhat clearer than the preceding consciousness, but on the other hand it has lost something with
respect to broadness of vision. In the deep, dreamless sleep of his present life, man has a condition of
consciousness similar to that which he once had on the Sun. However, he who is not a clairvoyant or a
medium cannot perceive the objects and beings corresponding to the Sun consciousness. With the
trance of a medium reduced to this condition, and with the higher consciousness of the true
clairvoyant, the case here is similar to what has been said with respect to the Saturn consciousness.
The extent of the Sun consciousness is limited to the Sun and the heavenly bodies most closely
connected with it. It is only these and their events which the inhabitant of the Sun can experience as
— to use once again the simile employed above — man of today experiences his heartbeat. In this
way the inhabitant of Saturn could also participate in the life of those heavenly bodies which did not
belong to the immediate sphere of Saturn.
When the Sun stage has, passed through the appropriate subordinate cycles, it also enters a period of
rest. From this the heavenly body of man awakes to its “Moon existence.” Before ascending higher,
again man passes through the Saturn and Sun stage in two smaller cycles. Then he enters his Moon
One can more easily form an idea of the latter, for there is a certain similarity between this stage of
consciousness and a sleep filled with dreams. It must be explicitly stated that here again one can only
speak of a similarity, not of an identity. It is true that the Moon consciousness is composed of images
such as appear in dreams, but these images correspond to the objects and events around man in a way
similar to the ideas of the present “clear consciousness of day.” But everything in this correspondence
is still dull, in fact, image-like.
One can represent this state of affairs to oneself in approximately the following way. Assume that a
Moon-being comes near an object, let us say near salt. (Of course, at that time there was no “salt” in
its present form, but after all, in order to be understood, one must remain in the area of images and
This Moon-being — the precursor of present-day man — does not perceive an object with spatial
extension and a definite coloring and form outside itself; instead, the approach to this object causes a
certain image — similar to a dream image — to arise as it were within this being.
This image has a certain coloring which depends on the characteristics of the object. If the object is
agreeable to the being and useful for its existence, the coloring is light in yellow nuances, or in green;
if the object is disagreeable or is one which is harmful to the being, a blood-like, reddish color nuance
appears. The clairvoyant also sees in this way today, only he is fully conscious during this seeing,
while the Moon inhabitant had only a dreamlike, dim consciousness.
The images appearing “within” these inhabitants had an exactly defined relationship to the
environment. There was nothing arbitrary in them. It was possible to direct oneself by them; one acted
under the impression of these images as today one acts under the impression of sensory perceptions.
The development of this dreamlike consciousness — the third principal stage — was the task of the
“Moon cycle.” When the “Moon” had passed through the appropriate “small cycles,” a period of rest
(Pralaya) again occurred. After this, the “Earth” emerged from the darkness.

Over and over again we find these odd clues that point to an ancient civilization
that existed something over 12,000 years ago. There has been a raging controversy
for generations between pro-Atlanteans and anti-Atlanteans about this. There seem
to be sufficient archaeological remains to justify a serious scientific study based on
such a hypothesis but so far, there are no “takers” in the mainstream scientific
community. Archaeology and ethnology, being observational sciences, and not
experimental sciences, have built their entire framework upon the study of those
remains. And when we look closely at the array of discoveries in those fields, we
note bits and pieces of cultures of almost unspeakable age. The fact that
uniformitarian science barely allows the idea of cataclysmic destruction to be part
of the hypothesis cripples archaeologists and, in the end, may make fools of them
Without the algorithm of cyclic cataclysm, archaeologists cannot fully
understand what they observe, nor can they explain the anomalies here and there,
and the lack of other evidence that ought to be here and there (if one assumes great
antiquity of civilization with no cataclysms). The fact seems to be that, what does
continue to exist in terms of archaeological remains from times before 7,000 or
more years ago, have been subjected to geological and cosmic cataclysms of
almost incomprehensible violence and few major relics remain for perusal. Those
few, however, are cast aside as the anomalies of archaeology and ethnology, and

their very existence is buried or denied in efforts to avoid toppling the house of
cards so laboriously established by those sciences.
Nevertheless, we find that all over the globe, with few exceptions, these studies
break down almost completely right around 7,000 to 10,000 BC, at which point
they meet with what mathematicians call a “discontinuity”. Immediately after this
discontinuity, all of the hot-spots of ancient civilization that archaeologists accept
as valid suddenly appear with no indication of gradual, uniformitarian
development. What is more, there seems to be considerable indication that these
developments were degenerate remnants of something already lost in the mists of
Entire libraries of books have been written demonstrating this antiquity of man
and his civilizations, but it has not yet been accepted, even in principle, by any
branch of modern science. The scientific thought police oppose any type of
cataclysmic change in the structure of the earth and will go to any extremes to
avoid coming to grips with its evidence. And yet, as we will see, science breaks
down again when it is forced to contemplate the origin of man’s intellectual
Ancient Flight?
Is there any “hard” evidence for this ancient, worldwide, high civilization? I
don’t want to spend too much time going over all of it and attempting to reproduce
the fine efforts of other writers. But, just to cover the subject briefly, one of the
most telling pieces of hard evidence is included in Charles Hapgood’s book, Maps
of the Ancient Sea Kings. Hapgood, a Professor of Anthropology, included in his
book a most interesting letter from a group of cartographers in the United States
Air Force. The statements in this letter, to my knowledge, have never been
challenged. In fact, the letter itself doesn’t receive much attention, though
Hapgood is certainly referred to as a crank often enough. The letter refers to a
series of highly technical analyses of several maps that Dr. Hapgood presented to
the cartographers. After their study, they wrote:
It is not very often that we have the opportunity to evaluate maps of ancient origin.
The Piri Reis (AD 1513) and the Oronteus Fineaus [sic] (AD 1531) maps sent to us
by you, presented a delightful challenge for it was not readily conceivable that they
could be so accurate without being forged. With added enthusiasm we accepted this
challenge and have expended many off duty hours evaluating your manuscript and
the above maps. I am sure you will be pleased to know that we have concluded that
both of these maps were compiled from accurate original source maps, irrespective
of dates. The following is a brief summary of our findings:
The solution of the portolano projection used by Admiral Piri Reis, developed by
your class in Anthropology must be very nearly correct; for when known
geographical locations are checked in relationship to the grid computed by Mr.
Richard W. Strachan (MIT), there, is remarkably close agreement. Piri Reis’ use of
the Portolano projection (centred on Syene, Egypt) is an excellent choice, for it is a
developable surface that would permit the relative size and shape of the earth at that
(latitude) to be retained. It is our opinion that those who compiled the original map
had an excellent knowledge of the continents covered by this map.

As stated by Colonel Harold Z. Ohlmeyer in his letter (July 6, 1960) to you, the
Princess Martha Coast of Queen Maud Land, Antarctica, appears to be truly
represented on the southern sector of the Piri Reis Map. The agreement of the Piri
Reis map with the seismic profile of this area made by the Norwegian-British -
Swedish Expedition of 1949, supported by your solution of the grid, places beyond
a reasonable doubt the conclusion that the original source maps must have been
made before the present Antarctic ice cap covered Queen Maud Land coasts.
It is our opinion that the accuracy of the cartographic features shown in the
Oronteus Fineaus [sic] Map (AD 1530) suggests, beyond a doubt, that it also was
compiled from accurate source maps of Antarctica, but in this case of the entire
continent. Close examination has proved the original source maps must have been
compiled at a time when the land mass and inland waterways of the continent were
relatively free of ice. This conclusion is further supported by a comparison of the
Oronteus Finneaus [sic] Map with the results obtained by International Geophysical
Year teams in their measurements of the subglacial topography. The comparison
also suggests that the original source maps (compiled in remote antiquity) were
prepared when Antarctica was presumably free of ice. The Cordiform projection
used by Oronteus Fineaus [sic] suggests the use of advanced mathematics. Further,
the shape given to the Antarctic continent suggests the possibility, if not the
probability, that the original source maps were compiled on a stereographic or
gnomonic type of projection (involving the use of spherical trigonometry).
We are convinced that the findings made by you and your associates are valid, and
that they raise extremely important questions affecting geology and ancient history,
questions which certainly require further investigation.
We thank you for extending us the opportunity to have participated in the study of

The Antarctic ice cover is supposed to be millions of years old. Who could have
made a map of Antarctica when it was not covered by ice, and when? Why is it
that we believe this ice cover to be so old? And if it is not, how old is it really and
why does it present the appearance of being millions of years old, assuming it does
so to the trained scientist?
Charles Hapgood heard about these maps at a particular point in his life when he
was studying the ice ages. A copy of an ancient map had been found in the
Topkapi Palace in Istanbul in 1929, and a Turkish naval officer had presented a
copy of it to the US Navy Hydrographic Office. It was examined by scholars who
noted that the map represented Antarctica before it was covered with ice. Yet, the
map was painted on parchment and was dated to 1513, over 300 years before
Antarctica was officially “discovered”. Core samples taken by the Byrd Antarctic
Expedition showed that the last warm period in the Antarctic ended around 4,000
BC. It began about 9,000 years before that. The only conclusion that could be
drawn was that someone had mapped Antarctica at least 6,000 years ago. Hapgood
discovered that there were more of these ancient maps – portolans, as they are
called – and that some of them strongly indicate that the mapmaker had an aerial
view of what he was mapping! Hapgood himself writes:
The evidence presented by the ancient maps appears to suggest the existence in
remote times, before the rise of any known cultures, of a true civilisation, of an
advanced kind, which either was localized in one area but had worldwide
commerce, or was, in a real sense, a worldwide culture. This culture, at least in
some respects, was more advanced than the civilizations of Greece and Rome. In
geodesy, nautical science, and mapmaking it was more advanced than any known
culture before the 18th century of the Christian Era. It was only in the 18th century
that we developed a practical means of finding longitude. It was in the 18th century
that we first accurately measured the circumference of the earth. Not until the 19th
century did we begin to send out ships for exploration into the Arctic or Antarctic
Seas and only then did we begin the exploration of the bottom of the Atlantic. The
maps indicate that some ancient people did all these things.[…]
When I was a youth I had a plain simple faith in progress. It seemed to me
impossible that once man had passed a milestone of progress in one way that he
could ever pass the same milestone again the other way. Once the telephone was
invented, it would stay invented. If past civilizations had faded away it was just
because they had not learned the secret of progress. But Science meant permanent
progress, with no going back.[…] S.R.K. Glanville writes in The Legacy of Egypt:
“It may be, as some indeed suspect, that the science we see as the dawn of recorded
history was not science at its dawn, but represents the remnants of the science of
some great and as yet untraced civilization.”
By a series of analyses, Hapgood and others came to the conclusion that there
was an ancient civilization whose center or “home base” was Antarctica itself.141
The fact that it was a global society, just as our own is, was also evident to these
researchers from other clues. This was, to put it mildly, not an acceptable idea to
the uniformitarian view of evolution.

Dr. Hapgood never used the word “Atlantis” in his book. He knew the value of
his academic reputation and that he just couldn’t go there. But that was not a
problem for Erich von Daniken.
Von Daniken’s book Chariots of the Gods? came out in 1967 and proposed that
the ancient portolans, side by side with other anomalies, suggested the presence
and influence of extraterrestrial “gods” in ancient times. I find this to be a curious
sort of “damage control” that attempts – in a left handed way – to support the
uniformitarian hypothesis since it suggests strongly that mankind himself was
incapable of creating an advanced civilization on his own.
The portolans studied by Charles Hapgood demonstrate that there have been
very ancient cultures, or civilizations, which may have and could have developed
methods of flight. The existence of the great megalithic structures further suggest
that the energy sources of that time may have been much simpler and more
effective than ours, and more directly associated with forces which we do not yet
comprehend. Yes, we are dealing with indirect evidence, not always of the greatest
clarity. Yet in support of such antiquity, we note that there is stonework carved out
of the solid mountain of rock in South America, which certainly antedate the
Andean glaciers, and almost as certainly predate the formation of the mountains
themselves. This work is superior in technique to anything that can currently be
produced by our mechanized civilization. It seems almost patently evident that the
construction, sculpting and tunneling of our ancestors could only have been
accomplished by forces different from those in use by us today. The problem can
be solved by admitting to a levitating force developed and used by the same
common denominator – space flight – which simplifies so many other puzzles for
us. And it seems that these very things are what the myths of antiquity, including
that most captivating story of all, the legend of the Holy Grail, are telling us.
On the basis of the evidence of an antiquity, we postulate the ancient
development of some kind of science. In either case, it is of great importance to
consider these matters in terms of the how’s and why’s and who’s. Most books on
these subjects approach the matter from one of these assumptions or the other,
with little regard to what might be behind it all when considered in light of present
day observations. For us, the most telling thing about this is that either angle is
abhorrent to science and to most religions.
In the end, nothing but the existence of an extremely ancient high civilization
answers all of the problems presented by observed and recorded facts. And that is
what led us to ask the questions about what is the wellspring of our beliefs, what is
the source of our denial and rejection of what is observable in favor of an imposed
belief system? We will come to that issue soon enough.

The Neanderthal Enigma

Let’s come back now to the idea that the earth may have been an entirely
different place in terms of cosmic environment, thus enabling the dinosaurs to live
and thrive, we can ask if other “different” environments might have existed at
other times, specifically in relation to man himself? One example that might relate
to such an idea is the extraordinarily strange disappearance of Neanderthal man.

Actually, the disappearance of a whole, distinct group of human type beings at
such a relatively recent point in history, is scary as all get-out. Just think about it:
Neanderthals were everywhere in the icy lands of Europe and Western Asia for
over 150,000 years. They were enormously strong and manifestly intelligent. What
went wrong?
It is also proposed that, at the same moment in time that Neanderthal man just
went “poof!” homo sapiens sapiens (that’s us), just dropped in for dinner, so to
speak. Is there a connection between what went wrong for Neanderthal and what
was “right” for modern man? That question is driving a lot of paleontologists
Allan Wilson and Vincent Sarich of Berkeley undertook to determine the date of
human origins via DNA analysis. They were looking at proteins because they
knew that proteins evolve by accumulating mutations. They also knew that the
proteins in related species are slightly different from one another because of the
mutations that occur after a species splits off from the “common ancestor”.
Differences in proteins can be quantified.
Well, this wasn’t so controversial a thing to be doing until Wilson and Sarich
suggested that mutations occur across the millennia at a steady rate, like the ticks
of a molecular clock. If this was true, it meant that the difference in a given protein
in any two species would indicate not only how related they were, but also how
much time had elapsed since they shared a common ancestor. In other words,
Wilson and Sarich were going to analyze some proteins and tell us when we last
were apes. Everyone was holding their breath for the answer to this one.
Wilson and Sarich’s protein analysis suggested that the common ancestor of
apes and humans had lived only five million years ago. Stretching it to
accommodate errors, they could only give it eight million years. “To put it as
bluntly as possible,”, Sarich wrote, “one no longer has the option of considering a
fossil specimen older than about eight million years as a hominid no matter what
it looks like”.
The idea that there was or was not any genetic connection between Cro-Magnon
and Neanderthal led to many hot debates. A team of U.S. and German researchers
extracted mitochondrial DNA from Neanderthal bone showing that the
Neanderthal DNA sequence falls outside the normal variation of modern humans.
The researchers compared the Neanderthal sequence with 2,051 human
sequences and 59 common chimpanzee sequences. They found that the differences
in Neanderthal DNA occurred at sites where differences usually occur in both
humans and chimps. In other words, Neanderthal was simply a different species.
When the researchers looked at the Neanderthal sequence with respect to 994
human mitochondrial DNA lineages including Africans, Europeans, Asians,
Native Americans, Australians and Pacific Islanders, they found the number of
base pair differences between the Neanderthal sequence and these groups was 27
or 28 for all groups.
There is a long and interesting case of some Neanderthal remains in a cave in
Israel that some scientists were attempting to utilize as evidence that this was the
region in which Neanderthal morphed into anatomically modern man. The
interested reader may want to have a look at The Neanderthal Enigma by James
Shreeve for a blow-by-blow account of this idea and how it was shot down. The
end result is, just to save some time, the conclusion that it was another example of
Darwinist wishful thinking.
Naturally, since the idea that Neanderthal was not the precursor to modern man
was now pretty well squashed, that meant that modern man evolved along another
line. This opened the door to the acknowledgement of certain facts that had been
rejected in earlier debates, while the Neanderthal hypothesis was still viable, but
now looked like a reasonable way out of the dilemma. Suddenly, fossils of very
old, modern humans, were acceptable, even if they existed long before the
disappearance of Neanderthal.
The problem is, this little clue that a controversy exists is merely the end of a
thread hanging out there in public view. When you take hold of this one, oh my! It
does get deep and you do need hip-waders!
An interesting book was published a few years back entitled Forbidden
Archeology. The authors, Michael Cremo and Richard L. Thompson, were
savaged by the mainstream science critics for their “absurd ideas and ridiculous
assertions”. Most of all, it was suggested that, since they were not “experts”, they
simply could not understand the material they were assembling and, therefore, it
had no validity. Sad to say, I delayed reading this book for a rather long time
because of the negative reviews. However, as I pulled on this particular thread,
one disturbing element leading to another, I finally gave in and ordered the volume
and sat down to read it in a skeptical frame of mind. Just because it was well
written did not resolve my skepticism. Just because there were hundreds of
references to scientific papers did not persuade me that the authors had actually
come to the correct conclusions about those papers. So, I undertook to go to the
papers they cited myself.
As it turned out, I ended up reversing my opinion of Cremo and Thompson. A
great many of these scientific papers that they have cited were written in rather
plain terms that anyone could understand – even another non-expert like myself.
What is more, the fact that they have been “buried”, or marginalized, ignored,
flamed and forgotten, suggests more about the experts who have done this, and
who then adopt the jargon they use as a means of concealing that they really don’t
understand what they are doing, than it says about the authors who can clearly see
that we have serious problems reconciling the observable and empirical facts with
the “accepted theories”. By the time the reader is finished with this book, they will
be completely disgusted with the utter and absolute lies and fabrications of some
of the most influential members of the mainstream scientific community, what I
have come to call the Scientific Thought Police. When the masses of people come

to the realization that the power structure of any given period creates the
educational institutions that promulgate the lies and distortions that support the
political structure, and that the majority of the scientific community only “follow
the money” of the military-industrial complex, I tremble for those who have
chosen the cozy lies over the truth. Again, that raises the question as to who or
what ideology “controls” our world in such a way that science can – and is -
manipulated to support a political agenda? What is that agenda? We will come to

Evidence of the Ica Stones

Recently, some objects called the Ica Stones have become a subject of much
discussion. These stones were brought to the attention of the scientific community
in 1966 when a Dr. Javier Cabrera, a Peruvian physician, received a small, carved
rock for his birthday from a poor native. The carving on the rock looked ancient to
Dr. Cabrera, but intrigued him because it seemed to depict a primitive fish. It
wasn’t long before the locals were bringing the doctor scads more of these rocks
gathered from a riverbank. He soon had a collection of more than 15,000 stones,
many etched with impossible scenes that clearly depict such dinosaurs as
triceratops, stegosaurus, apatosaurus, and human figures riding on the backs of
flying pterodactyls! What’s more, some of the scenes are of men hunting and
killing dinosaurs! Others show men watching the heavens through what look like
telescopes, performing open-heart surgery, and cesarean section births, and even
some serious pornography.
Oh dear! How can this be? We have already been told that modern man is only
about 2 million years old and dinosaurs are thought to have become extinct 65
million years ago.
Sophia Melewska, a geomorphologist, was commissioned to investigate the
rocks, summarize their content, and comment on their authenticity. After studying
the collection of Ica stones, Melewska said that she was in a state of “intellectual
shock”. Melewska is one of the scientists now trying to direct the attention of
professional research toward this mystery with little success.
Part of the problem for mainstream science is the nature of artifacts themselves.
Unlike clay figurines that have organic material (i.e., straw) in their composition,
there are no organic materials that can be dated in plain old rock. The surface of
these rocks has a varnish that is produced by bacteria and minute organisms over
millennia. Such a varnish or patina will take thousands of years to discolor and
coat each stone. The etching of the stones removed the existing varnish, revealing
the lighter rock underneath. Since these rocks have developed additional varnish in
the etched grooves, the evidence is that they were carved a very, very long time
The BBC sent a team to investigate these stones, sending Neil Steede to examine
them. Steede examined the varnish on the stones but was not able to guess at the
date. Without recourse to radiometric dating, the strata in which an object is found
can often give a clue to their age. However, these stones were revealed by
accidental erosion, and their original resting place is not known.
Acting on a rumor, Steede traveled to a nearby village where he met a local
farmer who, reportedly, was in the process of carving similar stones for tourists.
The rumors of Dr. Cabrera’s collection had brought tourists to the area, seeking
what they are assured are the “real stones”. Steede discovered that the artist was
imitating the style on the Ica stones, but his technique was not as good. What was
more telling, the varnish was absent from his grooves.
It is at this point that the Scientific Thought Police went into action, or so it
seems. They pointed to these reproductions as proof of a hoax, and dismiss any
serious study of the original collection which is still maintained by Dr. Cabrera.
Just to drive home the point and put an end to the controversy, after the
broadcast of the BBC TV documentary, the farmer who had sold many of the
stones to Dr. Cabrera, and who had been caught carving others, was arrested and
interrogated. He was forced to admit that he had carved ALL of the stones himself
to sell to tourists! So, the “hoax” was over.
However, we soon discover that under Peruvian law, if the stones were genuine,
they belonged to the government, and if the farmer had been selling government
property to anyone, he would have gone to prison. By claiming that he had created
a hoax, the farmer was let off the hook and stayed out of jail. And rather than
determine scientifically if the stones were authentic, the authorities were satisfied
that they had dealt effectively with this troubling matter, and the farmer was
released. German journalist Andreas Fischer visited the farmer later, at which time
the poor traumatized guy revealed that he had admitted to perpetrating a hoax only
to avoid going to prison.
Regarding the Ica stones, we have three possibilities: a human civilization
existed during the age of the dinosaurs; dinosaurs survived to coexist with man; or
the stones are an elaborate hoax. Considering all the other evidence of the
Scientific Thought Police on the prowl, I vote against number three, but I can’t
claim any certainty about either of the other two solutions. I rather think that Time
Loops could be added to the list.

Other Artifacts
Now and again an anomalous artifact “pops up”. One particular little item
always fascinated me. It seems that, during mining operations in 1851, at
Dorchester, Massachusetts, blasting threw out a bell shaped vessel from its bed in
formerly solid rock. It was made of an unknown metal and was decorated with
floral inlays of silver.143
When we consider ancient archaeological evidence, most of which consists of
fragmentary bits and pieces of skeletons or stone tools, we do not get the idea of

an ancient worldwide, advanced civilization. However, there is something about
this that we need to consider before we discard such an idea.
The first thing to think about is the fact that our own “history” is a mere 5
thousand years old. When we talk about the possible existence of man on the earth
for literally millions of years, many, many civilizations could have come and gone,
leaving little more than fragmentary remains. If the reader will have a look at some
books that show pictures of the ancient structures whose history we know, and
think, for a moment, about what might remain of our own civilization after a
period of ten thousand years, it becomes evident that even under the best of
conditions, little would remain that would be recognizable as the works of man. I
have tried to imagine what the structures of our civilization would look like after
thousands of years of abandonment. I had to admit that we have not created a very
substantial environment. The prospects of providing future archaeologists with
such elegant ruins are indeed remote! And, to assume that societies which did
leave sophisticated metropolitan centers were primitive in their technologies, and
backward, compared to our own, seems to be the ultimate in absurd conceit.
In fact, in these terms, metal is the least substantial element of all. Many
gravesites have been dug up after only a few hundred years, and metal objects,
aside from precious metals, have tended to simply disintegrate into powder. So, as
a matter of fact, the things that would be preserved the longest are objects of stone.
So, just because the only remains we find are stone does not prove that technology
of metals was not known. In fact, there is considerable evidence of metals mining
all over the earth far into dim antiquity. Further, during those inter-civilizational
periods when we might conjecture that man was forced to use whatever
implements he could to survive, stone is always there, always handy, and always
works. Thus it is that repeated periods wherein primitive stone tools are evidence,
in no way contradicts the idea of other periods of high civilization.
There is another thing we need to consider about the possible survival of
artifacts: cataclysm. The evidence that repeated worldwide cataclysms have
occurred tells us that it is very likely that, during such events, the forces of the
earth itself would grind up, pulverize, and bury the works of man so completely
that the fact that we find any traces at all is practically a miracle. You could say
that such artifacts have a very short “shelf life”!
It is generally agreed that agriculture first developed in the “Fertile Crescent” of
the Middle East. In fact, the archaeological record supports this idea. It is also
generally agreed that Pastoral Nomadism developed in the Central Asian Steppes.
Archaeology also supports this idea. However, the archaeology of these two
developments only go back to a certain relatively recent date which poses a
problem when one considers the Nostratic language hypothesis. In other words, if
an advanced civilization existed in the distant past, it was from the survivors of
this civilization that the Shepherds and agriculturalists of our present world
paradigm evolved.
About 35,000 years ago, at the same time that homo sapiens sapiens (Cro-
Magnon) was supposed to have appeared on the stage of history, simultaneously
with the mysterious disappearance of Neanderthal man, there also appeared an
explosion of representational art. It is as if the birth of culture occurred from the
primal continuum of the Paleolithic mind. Prominent among these first and most
artistic creations are diverse representations of the creatrix goddess of fertility,
complemented by sculptures and wall paintings of animals and the hunt of a more
shamanic content. The consistency and the careful beauty of these figurines is
consistent with the worship of the female as generator of the continued line of
living existence.
The mainstream explanation for this event is that while primitive men were
wandering hunters who had to remain silent in the shamanic meditation of the
hunt, the women were collecting and recognizing a wide variety of plants, talking
more and socializing and forming the foundation skills that underpinned the birth
of civilization. The myths of diverse tribal cultures hint at a previous era when
women were the founding influence in this way. The “Venuses” of Dolni
Vestonice, Willendorff, Lespugue, and Laussel date from inter-Gravitean
Solutrean 20,000-18,000 BC.
The Sudden Appearance of Cro-Magnon
As we have noted, it was formerly thought by paleontologists that Neanderthal
morphed into Cro-Magnon, and that Cro-Magnon was the progenitor of human
beings as we know them today. However, aside from the problems of the Eve
Hypothesis, there are serious problems with the assumptions about when modern
human types actually appeared on Earth. Even if we take the evolving scientific
view of the present day, we find that Cro-Magnon man was something altogether
different from other anatomically modern humans.
Over and over again we read in scientific studies that Cro-Magnon man was just
an “anatomically modern human”. The experts will say: “The Cro-Magnons lived
in Europe between 35,000 and 10,000 years ago. They are virtually identical to
modern man, being tall and muscular and slightly more robust than most modern

Magnon man was, compared to the other “anatomically modern humans” around
him, practically a superman. They were skilled hunters, toolmakers and artists
famous for the cave art at places such as Lascaux, Chauvet, and Altamira. They
had a high cranium, a broad and upright face, and cranial capacity “about the same
as modern humans” (can we say larger?), but less than that of Neanderthals. The
males were as tall as 6 feet. They appeared in Europe in the upper Pleistocene,
about 40,000 years ago and “their geographic origin is still unknown”. Their
skeletal remains show a “few small differences from modern humans”.
Of course, the “out of Africa” theory advocates suggest that Cro-Magnon came
from Sub Saharan Africa and a temperate climate and that, “they would eventually
adapt to all extremes of heat and cold”. In this way, the “slight differences”
between Cro-Magnon and other forms of anatomically modern humans can be
explained away as an adaptation to cold. But, as we will see, this idea doesn’t hold
Cro-Magnon’s tools are described as the Aurignacian technology, characterized
by bone and antler tools, such as spear tips (the first) and harpoons. They also used
animal traps, and bow and arrow. They invented shafts and handles for their
knives, securing their blades with bitumen, a kind of tar, as long as 40 thousand
years ago. Other improvements included the invention of the atlatl, a large bone or
piece of wood with a hooked groove used for adding distance and speed to spears.
They also invented more sophisticated spear points, such as those that detach after
striking and cause greater damage to prey.144
The Cro-Magnon type man was also the “originator” of such abstract concepts
as “time”. They marked time by lunar phases, recording them with marks on a
piece of bone, antler or stone. Some of these “calendars” contained a record of as
many as 24 lunations.
In the relatively recent past, tool industries diversified. The Gravettian industry
(25 to 15 thousand years ago), characterized by ivory tools such as backed blades,
is associated with mammoth hunters. One type of brief industry was Solutrean,
occurring from 18 to 15 thousand years ago and limited to Southwest France and
Spain. It is characterized by unique and finely crafted “laurel leaf” blades, made
with a pressure technique requiring a great skill. The industry is associated with
horse hunters. The tool industry of the Clovis Culture in North America (11 to 8
thousand years ago) is notable for its remarkable similarity to Solutrean. Some
suggest that the Solutrean culture migrated to North America around 12,000
thousand years ago.
Cro-Magnon people lived in tents and other man-made shelters in groups of
several families. They were nomadic hunter-gatherers and had elaborate rituals for
hunting, birth and death. Multiple burials are common in the areas where they
were found. What is most interesting is that from 35 to 10 thousand years ago,
there was no differentiation by sex or age in burials. They included special grave
goods, as opposed to everyday, utilitarian objects, suggesting a very increased
ritualization of death and burial..
They were the first confirmed to have domesticated animals, starting by about
15 thousand years ago (though ancient sapiens may have domesticated the dog as
much as 200 thousand years ago). They were the first to leave extensive works of
art, such as cave paintings and carved figures of animals and pregnant women.
Huge caves lavishly decorated with murals depicting animals of the time were at
first rejected as fake for being too sophisticated. Then they were dismissed as
being primitive, categorized as hunting, fertility or other types of sympathetic
magic. Re-evaluations have put these great works of art in a more prominent place
in art history. They show evidence of motifs, of following their own stylistic
tradition, of “impressionist” like style, perspective, and innovative use of the
natural relief in the caves. Also possible, considering the new concepts of time
reckoning practiced by Cro-Magnon, are abstract representations of the passage of
time, such as spring plants in bloom, or pregnant bison that might represent

representations of people, “anthropomorphs,” are very few, and never show the
accuracy or detail of the other animals. Humans are represented in simple outlines
without features, sometimes with “masks”, often without regard to proportion,
being distorted and isolated. At the Grottes des Enfants in France are found four
burials with red ocher, and associated with Aurignacian tools. At Lascaux, France,
are the famous caves of upper Paleolithic cave art, dated to 17 thousand years ago,
and even older, in some cases, by many thousands of years!
The modern human types that appeared in the Levant were, however, somewhat
different from Cro-Magnon. They were the sub-Saharan type, less “robust”
individuals than the Cro-Magnon “superman” of Europe.
What seems to be the truth of the matter is simply that the modern humans of the
Levant were “different” from the Cro-Magnon types that “appeared” in Europe.
Try as they would, there is simply was no way to prove that Cro-Magnon evolved
in Africa or the Levant and then moved to Europe.
But then, how to explain what happened in any reasonable terms?
What the archaeological record seems to show is that in Europe, after millennia
of almost no progress at all, even in the few areas where modern man has been
found, suddenly human culture seems to take off like an explosion with the
appearance of Cro-Magnon man. Not only does culture explode, but also new
ways of doing things, new styles and innovations that were utterly unknown in the
period immediately preceding them, suddenly appear, only to disappear again like
an outdated fad. From Spain to the Urals, sites list the developments of sewing
needles, barbed projectiles, fishhooks, ropes, meat drying racks, temperature
controlled hearths, and complex dwellings.
The most amazing part of all of it is the art. Art suddenly springs onto the
landscape, fully formed, with no period of gradual development; no signs of
childish attempts preceding it. A piece of ivory carved 32,000 years ago is as
realistic as anything turned out by the most accomplished carver of the present
The Upper Paleolithic signals the most fundamental change in human behavior that
the archaeological record may ever reveal.
The only explanation for this tremendous change is that a new kind of human
appeared on the earth stage.
When we consider the difficulties of such an event, in terms of “evolution”, we
find that this presents a huge difficulty in our understanding. First of all, we still
have the problem of a 60,000-year time lag between the appearance of the sub-
Saharan modern type man who was on the scene with no “improvements” in his
technology for that length of time. If Cro-Magnon evolved in Africa, why isn’t
there a continuous record of incremental developments? By the same reasoning, if
he evolved only after crossing the Mediterranean to Europe, why isn’t there a
continuous record of incremental developments?
The most effective and popular way that science deals with this crisis is to
ignore it, to deny it, or to seek to twist the facts to fit the theory. Many
archaeologists continue to account for the cultural events of the Upper Paleolithic
by tying them to the emergence of a more modern, intellectually superior form of
human being from Africa. They propose a “second biological event” to explain
this, never mind that it left no tracks in any skeletal shape.
Nowadays, the idea is to suggest that the other “modern men” of sub-Saharan
Africa were not really fully modern. They were “near-modern”. Thus, Africa is
preserved as the origin of all mankind, and the only thing necessary was a
breakthrough in the African lineage, a “neurological event” that allowed this “new
man” to develop all these new cultural behaviors overnight, so to say.
What this amounts to is saying that the explosion of culture in the Upper
Paleolithic times did not happen earlier because other modern men didn’t have the
brains to make it happen. Unfortunately, the support for this idea amounts only to
circular logic. What’s more, it seems that if it were a “neurological event”, it
would start in a small place and spread outward. But what seems to have happened
is that it sort of exploded in a lot of places at once: from Spain to the Ural
mountains in Russia! And in fact, the Middle East is the LAST place where art

around 43,000 years ago. Three thousand years later, the Aurignacian craze is all
over Europe.
We ought to note that the Neanderthals did not have art. What’s more, there was
essentially no change in their stone tools for 100,000 years.

Some people suggest that the impetus for culture was the sudden development of
speech. But that idea doesn’t hold much water either. If we were to look at some
of the aboriginal societies of Australia and New Guinea, they are certainly
Neanderthal like in their stone tools. But they think and communicate in languages
that are as rich as ours, and they construct myths, stories and cosmologies with
these languages. They just don’t seem to be much interested in technology.
There is another very strange thing about this explosion of homo intellectualis
technologicus: it seems to have sort of “lost its steam” around 12,000 years ago.
We have already noted the pottery making of the Jomon. Even more startling is
the fact that twenty-six thousand years ago the residents of Dolni Vestonice were
firing ceramics in kilns. But you don’t read that in archaeology textbooks. In the
standard teachings, the emergence of ceramics is linked to the functional use of
pottery which supposedly did not appear until the agricultural revolution in the
Neolithic period some 12,000 years after the kilns at Dolni were last used.
Oh dear! Did we just stumble on something interesting? Didn’t we just note that
something happened to “cool” the steam of the cultural explosion of the Upper
Paleolithic and that it happened about 12,000 years ago? And we noted that the
Jomon culture “began” at about the same time. And here we note that the
agricultural revolution occurred at about the same time as that “loss of creative
vigor”. Could the two have some connection?
In Bulgaria, a thousand miles to the east of Dolni Vestonice, there is a cave
called Bacho Kiro. It is famous for containing the earliest known Aurignacian tool
assemblages. They are 43,000 years old.
This brings us to another curious thing about Neanderthal man: he never seemed
to go anywhere. He always made his tools out of what was locally available, and
he never seemed to travel at all. What was made where it was made, stayed there.
Nobody traded or shared among the Neanderthal groups. But it seems that right
from the beginning, Cro-Magnon man was traveling and sharing and exchanging
not only goods, but technology. If there was a better form of stone somewhere
else, the word seemed to get around, and everybody had some of it. Distinctive
flints from southern Poland are found at Dolni Vestonice, a hundred miles to the
south. Slovakian radiolarite of red, yellow and olive is found a hundred miles to
the east. Later in the Upper Paleolithic period, the famous “chocolate flint” of
southern Poland is found over a radius of two hundred and fifty miles.151
Naturally, these rocks didn’t walk around on their own. Human legs carried them.
And that leads us to our next little problem with Cro-Magnon man: You see, his
legs were too long.
One of the sacred laws of evolutionary biology is called “Allen’s Rule”. This
rule posits that legs, arms, ears, and other body extremities should be shorter in
mammals that live in cold climates, and longer in mammals of the same period
who live where it is hot. This is because having short arms and legs conserves
heat. This is supposed to explain why Eskimos and Laplanders have short legs. It
also is supposed to explain why Bantu people are leaner, and the Maasai are
extremely long and lean in their tropical open country.
The only people who seem to be mocking Allen’s rule are Cro-Magnon. They
just refused to adapt. They all have much longer legs than they ought to. Of
course, this is pounced upon as proof that they came from Africa. The only
problem with this is that it is hard to imagine people from a warm climate
migrating to a cold one by choice. Then, on top of that, to remain long-limbed for
over a thousand generations? Keep in mind that, during that time, the thermometer
kept going down and, at the glacial maximum, 18,000 years ago, it was like the
North Pole in northern Europe! So how come they didn’t adapt?
By whatever means they arrived in Europe, we ought to take note of the fact that
their presence there may be related to the fact that Europe and other nearby
locations are literally blanketed with megaliths. Indeed, it may be so that the
megaliths came long after the appearance of Cro-Magnon man, but the connection
ought not to be discarded without some consideration.
We have still another problem here, and it has to do with dating. Analyzing
mitochondrial DNA data to reconstruct the demographic prehistory of Homo
Sapiens reveals statistical evidence of explosive growth around 50,000 to 60,000
years ago. Is there a connection between this DNA evidence and the appearance of
Cro-Magnon man? If so, it would mean that the DNA is dated to twice the age that
archaeology confirms. Instead of assuming that the archaeological dates are
correct, perhaps we ought to ask the question: could something be wrong with the
dating? From a morphological point of view as well as judging by their industry
and art, these highly evolved humans who coexisted with Neanderthal man
represent a mutation so enormous and sudden as to be absurd in the context of
evolutionary theory.
What in the world are we going to do with this problem? I could exhaustively
describe the endless books and papers that seek to explain it away; to account for
it, to marginalize it, and even ignore it. But at the end of it all, the fundamental
problem still remains: a new kind of man appeared on the planet, seemingly from
nowhere, and he was smart, artistic, and however he got here, he landed in a lot of
places simultaneously.
Did I say “landed”?
Yes, I did. Am I suggesting that Cro-Magnon man was an alien? Not exactly.
We still have to consider the mitochondrial DNA of Eve. I also haven’t forgotten
that annoying problem of the Asian vs. African origins of the “first mother” that
has been so deftly dealt with by avoidance and non-answers. What do all of these
factors, taken together, suggest? Well, any farmer can figure that one out: it
suggests hybridization. But that would imply somebody doing the hybridizing.
Further, we might wish to make note of the range of this culture that suddenly
dropped in on Europe: from Spain (and a small region of North Africa) to the Ural
Mountains that are at the border of Central Asia.
The steppes of Central Asia, just north of Turkmenia, are a difficult environment
for agriculture. Goats and sheep and cattle bones are found there that date to about
4000 BC. Later, the camel and horse came into use. These cultures spoke Indo-
European languages and their members are believed to have been Caucasoid.
There have been many theories that the Caucasoid nomads of the Central Asian
steppes migrated to Europe. But, as we have seen, the initial migration may have
been from West to East. The archaeological record is uncertain, and therefore the
migrations of the Indo-Europeans (for so we may most assuredly call them) from
the Asian steppes are no longer as clear in the minds of scholars as they once
were.152 The migrations into India and Pakistan, however, do seem to have some
firmer foundation. These incursions were most likely from the Andronovo and
Srubnaya cultures as the culture described in the oldest Aryan texts is very similar
to that of the steppe nomads.

It is assumed that man is the product of slow and orderly evolution and his
present hope for three-score and ten years is a great advancement, since recorded
history indicates to us that during other periods of history, when more hostile
conditions prevailed, man had a much reduced life-span. I would like to
conjecture, however, that a fundamental reordering of things during several
episodes in the earth’s past might have appreciably altered conditions so that an
original “Edenic condition” was lost. Must we assume that the ancients did not
understand time as we know it when they claimed to live hundreds of years? Or
must we assume that Time is always and forever the same thing?
Obviously many creatures have lived upon the earth that no longer live here.
When they disappear or are all killed off, we say that they are “extinct”. It
occurred to me at some point that, perhaps, “extinction” is a symptom of the fact
that the cosmos in which that species was able to flourish has lost its vigor. It
doesn’t matter how the species becomes extinct, because, in the end, it is only a
symbol. What is more, the fact that a certain species does not reassert itself after
such losses suggests that certain conditions have changed, and those changes are
When we begin to look at the South American cultures, the first thing we are
told is how “recent” they are. Polish archaeologist Arthur Posnansky dated the
Kalasasaya palace court at Tiahuanaco, near Lake Titicaca in Bolivia, to 15,000 to
10,000 BC. Mainstream experts assure us that this evidence simply cannot be
considered because radiometric dating says otherwise. Well, we already know that
radiometric dating is a lost cause, so we can set that aside for the moment and
consider other factors.
This brings us back to the subject of Atlantis. According to Plato, “In those days
the Atlantic was navigable; and there was an island situated in front of the straits
which are by you called the Pillars of Hercules”. We might want to ask what Plato
could have meant by this remark since, based on all knowledge of the sea floor of
the Atlantic, it has always been navigable. However, there is something about this
that was pointed out to me by an individual in the shipping industry who wrote:
I am intrigued by Plato’s remarks that the Atlantic was “navigable” before. As ship
equipment suppliers, when we say the water is navigable, it means not only that the
water is deep enough (the Atlantic was deep when the Critias story was
reconstructed, so how could it have been any more convenient before?), but

“navigable” also means, today, that on land there are sufficient radio direction or lit
indicators and, that once a ship is out of sight of land, he has gyros, or echo
sounders which, together with accurate charts means he can safely increment his
way forward avoiding shipwreck. So “Navigable“ on a deep ocean really means
instruments are on land and on the ships and that accurate charts exist (with
soundings) – all three.
Since Ignatius Donnelly, scholars have produced a veritable shipload of books
speculating on the location of Atlantis. I have a couple of shelves full of these
books, and the theories range from the destruction of the island of Santorini by the
eruption of Thera around 1600 BC112 to Indonesia, to the Black Sea. More
recently, Rand and Rose Flem-Ath have proposed that Antarctica was the “island
of Atlantis” and that it “shifted” or “moved” South as a function of crustal
Plato described Atlantis as an “island empire” that, “in a single day…
disappeared in the depths of the sea”. But he also tells us that this “island” was
bigger than Libya and Asia Minor combined. Right away we perceive that his
terms are a bit different from what we would use. We might think that his term
“island”, meant simply that this body of land was not connected to Eurasia or
Africa – that it was a distinct body of land surrounded by water – except for
something else he added: Plato also told us that Atlantis was “the way to other
islands, and from these you might pass to the whole of the opposite continent”.
This suggests to us an unusual land formation – an isthmus.
His expression that it “disappeared into the depths of the sea” may have
beenmeant to suggest that it was swept by vast tsunamis as the result of some
cataclysmic event. So, considering these clues – its vast size, the definition of the
term “navigable”, and the idea that “disappearing into the depths of the sea” very
likely meant swept by terrifying walls of water, let take a peek through the Pillars
of Hercules. What do we see? Well, we see the Americas. We see North and South
America connected by an isthmus. We also see a lot of little islands in the

Something catastrophic happened to the large mammals roaming the world
during the Pleistocene Epoch. Woolly mammoths, mastodons, toxodons, sabretoothed
tigers, woolly rhinos, giant ground sloths, and many other large
Pleistocene animals are simply no longer with us. The fact is, more than 200
species of animals completely disappeared at the end of the Pleistocene

approximately 12,000 years ago in what is known to Paleontologists as the
“Pleistocene Extinction”.
At the same time that the paleontologists are dealing with the unsettling notion
of such a recent mass death, geologists are confronted with the evidence of
terrifying geological changes which took place: extensive volcanism and
earthquakes, tidal waves, glacial melting, rising sea levels, and so on. The
Pleistocene Epoch didn’t end with a whimper, for sure. It went out roaring and

it keeps them up at night. They fought long and hard against the Catastrophists.
But in the present day, scientists in both fields have to face the fact that the
Catastrophists were mostly right from the beginning – even if they might have
gone overboard and explained everything in terms of catastrophe. It is evident that
there are “gradual” changes, but that most of what happens on the Big Blue
Marble in terms of significant changes is catastrophic.
One of the major facts that paleontologists and geologists and archaeologists
have had to face is the stupendous number of frozen carcasses in Canada and
Alaska in the western areas, and in Northern Russian and Siberia in the eastern
areas – all dated to about 12000 years ago. This suggests, of course, that something
dreadful happened on the planet, and its effect on the Northern hemisphere was
more severe than on the Southern hemisphere.
Back in the 1940s Dr. Frank C. Hibben, Prof. of Archeology at the University of
New Mexico led an expedition to Alaska to look for human remains. He didn’t
find human remains; he found miles and miles of icy muck just packed with
mammoths, mastodons, and several kinds of bison, horses, wolves, bears and
lions. Just north of Fairbanks, Alaska, the members of the expedition watched in
horror as bulldozers pushed the half-melted muck into sluice boxes for the
extraction of gold. Animal tusks and bones rolled up in front of the blades “like
shavings before a giant plane”. The carcasses were found in all attitudes of death,
most of them “pulled apart by some unexplainable prehistoric catastrophic
The evident violence of the deaths of these masses of animals, combined with
the stench of rotting flesh, was almost unendurable both in seeing it, and in
considering what might have caused it. The killing fields stretched for literally
hundreds of miles in every direction.114 There were trees and animals, layers of
peat and moss, twisted and tangled and mangled together as though some Cosmic
mixmaster sucked them all in 12000 years ago, and then froze them instantly into a
solid mass.
Just north of Siberia entire islands are formed of the bones of Pleistocene
animals swept northward from the continent into the freezing Arctic Ocean. One
estimate suggests that some ten million animals may be buried along the rivers of
northern Siberia. Thousands upon thousands of tusks created a massive ivory trade
for the master carvers of China, all from the frozen mammoths and mastodons of
Siberia. The famous Beresovka mammoth first drew attention to the preserving
properties of being quick-frozen when buttercups were found in its mouth.
What kind of terrible event overtook these millions of creatures in a single day?
Well, the evidence suggests an enormous tsunami raging across the land, tumbling
animals and vegetation together, to be finally quick-frozen for the next 12000
years. But the extinction was not limited to the Arctic, even if the freezing at
colder locations preserved the evidence of Nature’s rage.
Paleontologist George G. Simpson considers the extinction of the Pleistocene
horse in North America to be one of the most mysterious episodes in zoological
history, confessing, “no one knows the answer”. He is also honest enough to admit
that there is the larger problem of the extinction of many other species in America
at the same time.116 The horse, giant tortoises living in the Caribbean, the giant
sloth, the saber-toothed tiger, the glyptodont and toxodon. These were all tropical
animals. These creatures didn’t die because of the “gradual onset” of an ice age,
“unless one is willing to postulate freezing temperatures across the equator, such
an explanation clearly begs the question”.
Massive piles of mastodon and saber-toothed tiger bones were discovered in
Florida.118 Mastodons, toxodons, giant sloths and other animals were found in
Venezuela quick-frozen in mountain glaciers. Woolly rhinoceros, giant armadillos,
giant beavers, giant jaguars, ground sloths, antelopes and scores of other entire
species were all totally wiped out at the same time, at the end of the Pleistocene,
approximately 12000 years ago.
This event was global. The mammoths of Siberia became extinct at the same
time as the giant rhinoceros of Europe; the mastodons of Alaska, the bison of
Siberia, the Asian elephants and the American camels. It is obvious that the cause
of these extinctions must be common to both hemispheres, and that it was not
gradual. A “uniformitarian glaciation” would not have caused extinctions because
the various animals would have simply migrated to better pasture. What is seen is
a surprising event of uncontrolled violence.119 In other words, 12000 years ago, a
time we have met before and will come across again and again, something terrible
happened – so terrible that life on earth was nearly wiped out in a single day.
Harold P. Lippman admits that the magnitude of fossils and tusks encased in the
Siberian permafrost present an “insuperable difficulty” to the theory of
uniformitarianism, since no gradual process can result in the preservation of tens
of thousands of tusks and whole individuals, “even if they died in winter”.
Especially when many of these individuals have undigested grasses and leaves in
their belly. Pleistocene geologist William R. Farrand of the Lamont-Doherty
Geological Observatory, who is opposed to catastrophism in any form, states,
“Sudden death is indicated by the robust condition of the animals and their full
stomachs … the animals were robust and healthy when they died”.
Unfortunately, in spite of this admission, this poor guy seems to have been
incapable of facing the reality of worldwide catastrophe represented by the
millions of bones deposited all over this planet right at the end of the Pleistocene.
Hibben sums up the situation in a single statement: “The Pleistocene period ended
in death. This was no ordinary extinction of a vague geological period, which
fizzled to an uncertain end. This death was catastrophic and all inclusive.”
The conclusion is, again, that the end of the Ice Age, the Pleistocene extinction,
the end of the Upper Paleolithic, Magdalenian, Perigordian, and so on, and the end
of the “reign of the gods”, all came to a global, catastrophic conclusion about
12,000 years ago. And, as it happens, even before this evidence was brought to
light, this is the same approximate date that Plato gave for the sinking of Atlantis.
In recent years, a cartographer named J. M. Allen published a book entitled
Atlantis: The Andes Solution. Allen focused on South America as Atlantis. He
points to the fact that the Indian name for South America – before Columbus
arrived – was “Atlanta”. He informs us that this is related to the Quechua word for
copper, “antis.” Allen believes he has found the plain of canals on the Altiplano of
southern Peru and northern Bolivia. He suggests that the plain was very smooth
and level, was surrounded by mountains on all sides, and was high above ocean
level. This is, indeed, a close description of the Altiplano, supposedly the largest
level plain in the world, containing the inland seas of Lake Titicaca and Lake
Poopo. Allen found the remains of a channel of enormous dimensions in Bolivia,

There are ancient terraced cornfields on the sides of the mountains rising above
Lake Titicaca where corn no longer grows. Corn only grows at lower altitudes.
The lower altitude terraces where corn still grows are still above Lake Titicaca.
What this suggests is that peoples who constructed the terraces, and who were
growing corn there, must have been doing so at a time when the land was lower.
There is a stone causeway leading “out” of Lake Titicaca to nowhere. This
causeway is built like an ancient wharf, which has suggested that it was built when
the lake and the city were at sea level.
The remains of Tiahuanaco, the site of a technologically advanced culture
considered by many archaeologists (romantic, not orthodox) to be the oldest ruins
in the world. Although some misguided scholars have attributed the buildings of
Tiahuanaco to the Incas, it has now been established that the city was already in
ruins when the first Incas came upon the scene.
In 1540 the Spanish chronicler, Pedro Cieza de Leon, visited the area and his
description of the statues and monoliths compares very closely to what we see
today. The site is at an altitude of 13,300 feet, which places it some 800 feet above
the present level of Lake Titicaca. Most archaeologists agree that in the distant past
Tiahuanaco was a flourishing port at the edge of the lake, which means that the
water has receded almost 12 miles and has dropped about 800 feet since then. All
concur that the lake is shrinking, due mainly to evaporation, since no rivers flow
from it.
In November 1980, the well known Bolivian author and scholar of pre-Columbian
cultures, Hugo Boero Rojo, announced the finding of archaeological ruins beneath
Lake Titicaca about 15 to 20 meters below the surface off the coast of Puerto
Acosta, a Bolivian port village near the Peruvian frontier on the northeast edge of
the lake.
If, over the past 3 or 4000 years, Lake Titicaca has slowly receded, as appears to be
the case – as all scientists agree, then how can we explain the existence of stone
temples, stairways, and roads still under water’? The only answer is that they were
built before the lake materialized. We must go back, then, to the remnants of
Tiahuanaco and reexamine the more than 400 acres of ruins, only 10 percent of
which have been excavated. We have pointed out that dirt covers the ancient
civilization to a depth of at least 6 feet. The only explanation for this accumulation
is water.
A large amount of water had to have inundated the city; when it receded it left the
silt covering all evidence of an advanced civilization, leaving only the largest
statues and monoliths still exposed. It is logical to conclude, therefore, that
Tiahuanaco was built before the lake was created, and not as a port on its shore. As
the waters today continue to recede, we should be able to find more evidence of the
city’s remote peoples. Scientists theorize that the area at Lake Titicaca was at one

time at sea level, because of the profusion of fossilized marine life that can be
found in the region. The area then lifted with the Andean upheaval and a basin was
created which filled in to form the lake. No one has suggested the marine life might
have been brought to the altiplano by seawaters that were at flood stage.
The Tiahuanacans could have been victims of worldwide flood, their civilization all
but wiped out when their homes and structures were covered with seawater.
Because of the basin-like geography of the area the floodwaters that became Lake
Titicaca could not run off and have only gradually evaporated over the centuries.
Professor Schindler-Bellamy as a disciple of Posnansky and Horbiger (who created
the world famous Glacial-Cosmogony theory in the 1930’s) has worked dozens of
years in the Tiahuanaco area and has written books on the subject. According to
him the large monolithic Sun Gate of Tiahuanaco was evidently originally the
centerpiece of the most important part of the so-called Kalasasaya, the huge chief
temple of Tiahuanaco. Its upper part is covered with a stupendously intricate
sculpture in flat bas-relief. This has been described as a “calendar” almost as long
as the monolithic gateway has been known to exist; thus the Sun Gate has also been
called the Calendar Gate. This calendar sculpture, though it undoubtedly depicts a
“solar year”, cannot however be made to fit into the solar year as we divide it at
The “solar year” of the calendar’s time had very practically the same length as our
own, but, as shown symbolically by the sculpture, the earth revolved more quickly
then, making the Tiahuanacan year only 290 days, divided into 12 “twelfths” of 24
days each, plus 2 intercalary days. These groupings (290, 24, 12, 2) are clearly and
unmistakably shown in the sculpture.[…]
[According to Schindler-Bellamy], at the time Tiahuanaco flourished the present
moon was not yet the companion of our earth but was still an independent exterior
planet. There was another satellite moving around our earth then, rather close…
Because of its closeness it moved around the earth more quickly than our planet
rotated. Therefore it rose in the west and set in the east (like Mars’ satellite
Phobos), and so caused a great number of solar eclipses, 37 in one “twelfth,” or 447
in one “solar year.” These groupings (37, 447) are shown in the sculpture, with
many Corroborating cross-references. Different symbols show when these solar
eclipses, which were of some duration, occurred: at sunrise, at noon, at sunset.
These are only a small sample of the exact astronomical information the calendar
gives. It also gives the beginning of the year, the days of the equinoxes and
solstices, the incidence of the two intercalary days, information on the obliquity of
the elliptic (then about 16.5 degrees; now 23.5) and on Tiahuanaco’s latitude (then
about 10 degrees; now 16.27), and many other astronomical and geographical
references from which interesting and important data may be calculated or inferred
by us. […]
A few more facts revealed in the calendar are both interesting and surprising. As
indicated by an arrangement of “geometrical” elements we can ascertain that the
Tiahuanacans divided the circle factually astronomically, (but certainly
mathematically} into 264 degrees (rather than 360). Also, they determined (ages
before Archimedes and the Egyptians) the ratio of pi, the most important ratio
between the circumference of the circle and its diameter, as 22/7, or, in our
notation, 3.14+. They could calculate squares (and hence, square roots). They knew
trigonometry and the measuring of angles (30, 60, 90 degrees) and their functions.

They could calculate and indicate fractions, but do not seem to have known the
decimal system nor did they apparently ever employ the duodecimal system though
they were aware of it. (For a still unknown reason, however, the number 11 and its
multiples occur often.)
The most tantalizing fact of all is that the Tiahuanaco culture has no roots in that
area. It did not grow there from humbler beginnings, nor is any other place of origin
known. It seems to have appeared practically full-blown suddenly. Only a few
“older” monuments, as can be inferred from the “calendrical inscriptions” they
bear, have been found, but the difference in time cannot have been very great. The
different, much lower cultures discovered at considerable distances from
Tiahuanaco proper, addressed as “Decadent Tiahuacan” or as “Coastal
Tiahuanaco”, are only very indirectly related to the culture revealed by the
Calendar Gate. […]
When the satellite (the former moon) approached within a few thousand miles
gravitational forces broke it up; according to the Roche formula each planetoid or
asteroid disintegrates when approaching the critical distance of 50 to 60,000 kms.
The fragments shattered down on earth; the oceans, released from the satellite’s
gravity, flowed back toward the continents, exposing tropical lands and submerging
polar territories. […]
Thus the approach of the “moon” caused a world-wide deluge, effecting changes of
climate and provoking earthquakes accompanied by volcanic eruptions. The “ring”
left by the satellite after breaking into fragments caused a sudden drop in
temperature of at least 20 degrees… It is evident, for example, in the discovery of
frozen mammoths in the Siberian tundra. Possibly gravity – and therefore physical
weight – was also changed on earth, and with it biological growth: this would
explain the widespread construction of huge megalithic monuments as well as the
presence of giants – man and animal – in fossil strata, tombs, and myths. According
to Horbiger four moons fell on earth, producing four Ice Ages; our present moon,
the fifth one, will similarly be drawn into the critical configuration of one-fifth of
its present distance (380,000 kms.) and will cause the fifth cataclysm.
Tiahuanaco apparently remained for only a very short period at its acme of
perfection (evidenced by the Calendar Gate) and perished suddenly, perhaps
through the cataclysmic happenings connected with the breakdown of the former
We have at present no means of determining when Tiahuanaco rose to supreme
height, or when its culture was obliterated, as naturally, the calendar itself can tell
us nothing about that. It will certainly not have been in the historical past but well
back in the prehistoric. It must indeed have occurred before the planet Luna was
captured as the earth’s present moon, about 12,000 years ago.
There are several fascinating items in the above material. One that interests me
particularly is the speculation that the year was different prior to the deluge, and
that the number 11 was significant in some mysterious way. The ideas about the
capture of the moon, and a previous satellite which broke apart and rained
destruction on the earth are interesting, but my guess is that this might just be
interpretation of a swarm of comets or asteroids.
The theory of a falling moon has been discussed by Dr. John O’Keefe, a
scientist at the Goddard Laboratory for Astronomy in Maryland. O’Keefe claims
that the fragments of a moon’s collision formed a ring around our planet that
blocked the sun’s rays, thus causing world-wide decline of temperatures. After a
while the fragments disintegrated even further and showered down on earth, as
tectites. These tectites O’Keefe suggests, were fragments of a fallen moon.
What is evident is that this world-wide cataclysm of 12,000 years ago appears in
myths from every corner of the globe. The Egyptian Papyrus Ipuwer tells us that
“The sun set where it rose” and an Egyptian tomb, (Senmut) shows Orion and
Sirius painted in reverse position. The Finnish Kalevala says “the earth turned
round like a potter’s wheel” and the Popol Vuh describes a showering of fiery hail
from heaven.
On the outskirts of Brno, Moravia, there is a quarry where workers uncovered
the bones of a wooly mammoth. There, in the quarry, was discovered a 160 foot
deep sequence of multiple soil cycles. Each climate cycle from warm to cold was
expressed as a sequence of gradational soil types reflecting the change from a
moist, deciduous forest to an arid, frozen tundra, cracked by deeply penetrating
permafrost. Midway through each cycle, there are numerous bands of fine
windblown dust delivered in what must have been monstrous storms of continental
scale. Expert speculations suggest that this dust must have shrouded the earth for
weeks or months at a time and must have produced a refrigerating effect on
Europe’s climate. In the colder part of each cycle, the environment had become so
dry that even large rivers dried up.
It seems that the ice sheets that repeatedly advanced southward were
accompanied by the development of vast, but temporary deserts throughout Russia
and Ukraine, even extending into southeast Europe and to the shores of the Black
Sea. Every passage back from freezing cold to warm was abrupt in every cycle.
Oceanographers from Turkey, Russia, Bulgaria and the United States teamed up
to explore the Black Sea. Using sound waves and coring devices, they discovered
that the Black Sea was once a vast freshwater lake. Glenn Jones of the Woods
Hole Oceanographic Institution dated the samples from the bottom of the Black
Sea and confirmed that around 7,500 years ago, the seas had burst through the
Bosporus valley and the salt water of the Mediterranean poured into the lake with
unimaginable force. What was evident was that it had happened suddenly and

almost instantaneously. What was also noted was that the massive amounts of salt
water pouring into the Black Sea had been deficient in Oxygen.
While searching for the answers to this mysterious event, cores of coral were
drilled from the ocean in order to determine the rates of growth on a year by year
basis going back 20 thousand years. Apparently, ice melt affects the rate of coral
growth. The results of these cores showed that there was a huge spurt of ice-melt
around 12,000 years ago. The meltwater from this event was enormous. It filled up
dozens of lakes that no longer exist – lakes formed by the sag in the Earth’s crust
caused by the weight of the huge ice dome. Immediately following this melt, the
ice age returned for a brief period called the Younger Dryas.
At 8 p.m. on June 5th, 8498 BC, the core parts of Asteroid A punched the first
decisive hole in the fracture zone of the Atlantic Ridge. The forces of hell were let
loose. Through these two newly formed vents the glowing red-hot magma shot up
at terrific speed and mixed with the liquid above it – the waters of the Atlantic. This
created all the conditions for a submarine volcanic eruption of the greatest possible
violence. The fracture seam was torn apart. The bottom of the sea burst open. All
existing volcanoes were activated and new vents formed. Terrestrial fire and ocean
water became embroiled in ever-increasing volume. Magma mixed with steam. The
chain of fire ran all the way between the two continents from the Beerenberg
volcano on Jan Mayen in the north to Tristan de Cunha in the south.125
This rather dramatic description from the back of Otto Muck’s book – The Secret
of Atlantis – is based on his ideas about the causal relationship between isotherms
and favorable climate in northwestern Europe, and the unobstructed flow of the
Gulf Stream across the Atlantic. Muck attempts to use this flow to make a case for
the prior existence of a large body of land in the Atlantic whose subsidence
changed the ocean currents and warmed the British Isles about 10,500 years ago,
give or take a day or two. Based on a varied and interesting collection of hard data,
Muck suggests that the submarine massif of the Azores was once above water and
could have blocked and deflected the Gulf Stream, preventing the circulation of
the warmer waters, and thus contributing to the freezing temperatures of the
British Isles. Muck writes:
If we then date the transition from the Quaternary to the Quinternary Age at 12,000
years ago, or around 10,000 BC, we are doing so on the authority of contemporary
geologists and paleontologists. We are at the same time fixing the date when
Barrier Island X, which had hitherto prevented the Gulf Stream from reaching the
coasts of Europe, sank beneath the Atlantic … a point in time … when the warm
water and rain-bearing winds brought by the Gulf Stream were no longer deflected
back to the west by the Atlantic island barrier, but flowed freely eastward because
the barrier had sunk beneath the waves.

of interesting hard data,
even if I don’t necessarily
agree that there was a big
island that “sank beneath
the Atlantic”. There are
other solutions to the problem of the isotherms, including current day research
showing that this can result from global warming. While we don’t deny that it’s
possible for such severe lithosphere disruption as Muck suggests to occur, and we
aren’t playing soft with the idea of mass destruction of species, it just seems that
an event that would produce the sinking of so vast a body of land so completely
would be an event from which absolutely nothing on the earth would survive.
Nevertheless, Otto Muck draws our attention to the meteor craters in the
Carolinas. The Carolina bays are mysterious land features often filled with bay
trees and other wetland vegetation. Because of their oval shape and consistent
orientation, they are considered by some authorities to be the result of a vast
meteor shower that occurred approximately 12,000 thousand years ago. What is
most astonishing is the number of them. There are over 500,000 of these shallow
basins dotting the coastal plain from Georgia to Delaware. That is a frightening

topographical features follow a reliable and unmistakable pattern. Carolina Bays
are circular, typically stretched, elliptical depressions in the ground, oriented along
their long axis from the Northwest to the Southeast. [T]hey are further characterized
by an elevated rim of fine sand surrounding the perimeter. […]
The last twenty years have seen an explosion of evidence that earth has often
encountered objects that profoundly alter our environment. For instance, it is now
commonly accepted that an impact with a large object in the Gulf of Mexico caused
the extinction of large dinosaurs – a theory considered bizarre and irresponsible at
the time Kacrowski studied the Bays.
Robert Kobres, an independent researcher in Athens, Georgia, has studied Carolina
Bays for nearly 20 years in conjunction with his larger interest in impact threats
from space. His recent, self-published, investigations have profound consequences
for Carolina Bay study and demand research by academia as serious, relevant and
previously unexamined new information. The essence of Kobres’ theory is that the
search for “debris”, and the comparison of Bays with “traditional” impact craters,
falsely and naively assumes that circular craters with extraterrestrial material in
them are the only terrestrial evidence of past encounters with objects entering
earth’s atmosphere.
Kobres goes a logical step further by assuming that forces associated with incoming
bodies, principally intense heat, should also leave visible signatures on the earth.
And, finally, that physics does not demand that a “collision” of the bodies need
necessarily occur to produce enormous change on earth. To verify that such
encounters are possible outside of the physics lab, we need look no further than the
so-called “Tunguska event”.
On June 30, 1908, in the vicinity of the Tunguska River deep in Siberia, a
tremendous explosion instantly leveled 2000 sq. km. of tundra, felling trees by the
millions, all left pointing outward from a central area. News accounts of the day
told of Londoners being able to read newspapers from the glow of the night sky for
days afterward. Seismographs worldwide recorded an apparent cataclysm in
Siberia. Unfortunately (or fortunately as the case may be) the explosion had
occurred in an area so remote, and during a time of such political turmoil, that no
researcher pinpointed or even managed to travel to the suspected impact site for
more than two decades. Not until pioneer Russian meteoritic researcher Leonard
Kulik managed to gain entry to the inhospitable area in 1927, did anyone but local
tribesmen view the devastation and its peculiar nature.
At the epicenter of the explosion lay not a large crater with a “rock” in it, as might
be expected, but nothing more than a number of “neat oval bogs”. The Tunguska
literature generally mentions the bogs only in passing, since Kulik failed in digs
there to locate any evidence of a meteorite and went on to examine other aspects of
the explosion.
What do we have so far? We have an event that seems to have affected Eastern
Siberia and Northern North America more severely than other places, though
whatever it was certainly amounted to a global event. We have already talked
about the evidence of “nuclear bombardment” in the Great Lakes region provided
by Firestone and Topping that tells us:
Radiocarbon dates for Pleistocene remains in northeastern North America are as
much as 10,000 years younger than for those in the western part of the country.[…]
Materials from the Gainey Paleoindian site in Michigan, radiocarbon dated at 2880
yr BC, are given an age by TL dating of 12,400 BC. It seems that there are so many
anomalies reported in the upper US and in Canada of this type, that they cannot be
explained by ancient aberrations in the atmosphere or other radiocarbon reservoirs,
nor by contamination of data samples. […]
Our research indicates that the entire Great Lakes region (and beyond) was
subjected to particle bombardment and a catastrophic nuclear irradiation that
produced secondary thermal neutrons from cosmic ray interactions. The neutrons
produced unusually large quantities of Pu239 and substantially altered the natural
uranium abundance ratios […]
Sharp increases in C14 are apparent in the marine data at 4,000, 32,000-34,000, and
12,500 BC. These increases are coincident with geomagnetic excursions. […]
The enormous energy released by the catastrophe at 12,500 BC could have heated
the atmosphere to over 1000 C over Michigan, and the neutron flux at more
northern locations would have melted considerable glacial ice. Radiation effects on
plants and animals exposed to the cosmic rays would have been lethal, comparable
to being irradiated in a 5 megawatt reactor more than 100 seconds.
The overall pattern of the catastrophe matches the pattern of mass extinction before
Holocene times. The Western Hemisphere was more affected than the Eastern,
North America more than South America, and eastern North America more than
western North America. Extinction in the Great lakes area was more rapid and
pronounced than elsewhere. Larger animals were more affected than smaller ones, a
pattern that conforms to the expectation that radiation exposure affects large bodies
more than smaller ones.
Firestone and Topping propose that this evidence of nuclear radiation is a result
of “cosmic ray bombardment” from, perhaps, a supernova. D.S. Allan, a biologist
at Cambridge, and J. B. Delair, coauthor of Cataclysm!, published in 1995 in the
U.K, also like the supernova hypothesis. Evidence of a supernova explosion, in the

found in concentration at the edge of our solar system, helped Allan and Delair
conclude that a stellar blast probably caused the massive destruction. Iron ore in
the earth from about 11,000 years ago shows that its magnetic polarity violently
reversed. This certainly suggests an extraterrestrial encounter with a magnetically
powerful agent at that period. The supernova explanation, however, does not
account for all the evidence, most particularly the mythic and geological evidence
of massive bombardments of comets.
Dr. Paul LaViolette, author of Earth Under Fire, claims that he has discovered
evidence of a different sort of cataclysm, a volley of cosmic waves resulting from
an explosion in the galactic core. Entering our solar system, this galactic super
wave (the most powerful energetic phenomenon in the galaxy) would have
interrupted the solar wind’s ability to repel most intruding cosmic dust particles.
LaViolette builds a mythological foundation for his scientific theory, the
shakiest part of which is that he suggests that galactic core explosions are a
cyclical event, recurring every 26,000-year cycles, a period that relates to the
precession of the equinoxes. He claims that this is a great clock, and that the
precessional cycle is the duration of one Great Year recognized by the ancient
Greeks, Zoroastrians, and Chinese. La Violette’s theory is weak because galactic
core explosions, like other nuclear phenomena, are only statistically probable.
Further, the record shows a frequency greater than every 26,000 years, and his
attempts to introduce “mini-explosions” to account for this come across as so
much prestidigitation of the data. Also his theory does not account for all of the
evidence, most particularly the geological evidence of massive bombardments of
cometary bodies. What is more, La Violette’s claim that the precessional cycle is
the “great clock”, assumes that the current polar orientation has remained stable
for eons, and the very mythic evidence he tries to use as his foundation contradicts
this, most especially the decoded information from the Gate of the Sun at
Tiahuanaco reported above.
In all of this searching high and low for Atlantis, and comparing the
paleontogical records and geological records and archaeological records with the
story of Plato, the one major thing that everybody seems to be forgetting is this:
Plato’s tale was about a WAR followed by cataclysm.
According to Plato’s story, Atlantis was the center of a country of extreme
economic wealth and military power that sought to enslave all of Europe. The
Atlanteans were quite successful in defeating many European countries; however,
the great civilization of Athens repelled their attacks and eventually succeeded in
driving them back out of Europe. Unfortunately, almost all records of this great
achievement were lost due to a very powerful flood that wiped out most of Athens
and the whole continent of Atlantis in one day and one night.
Over and over again, what we see is the fact that something terrible happened on
the earth around 12,000 years ago. This time period comes up over and over again
in many disciplines having to do with the study of the past. And it just happens to
be the period designated by Plato’s characters as the time of the destruction of
Atlantis, following a terrible war in which Atlantis was defeated after attempting
to conquer the entire world, at the time of what is remembered as the greatest
deluge in human history: The Flood of Noah.

In terms of human beings, the Bible tells us that after the Flood of Noah, man
was no longer able to live the same lifespan that had originally been allotted to
him. Symbolically, this suggests that something significant about the cosmos or
the state of matter itself, had changed. Modern science, of course, completely
dismisses such ideas with seeming good reason. But, we should like to ask: What
if the shortening of man’s lifespan actually happened? What if it happened more
than once? What if such an event represents a loss of vigor or exhaustion of
cosmic resources? Or, what if it represents the fact that mankind originally
evolved in a different environment and the present one is no longer conducive to
such long lives? In this regard, some observations about dinosaurs are pertinent.
There have been found dinosaur remains in “bone-yards” which had shoulder
blades eleven feet long! The towering Brachiosaurus, an herbivore, stood up to
fifty feet tall and weighed perhaps a hundred tons! How could it have sustained
itself? One hundred tons is about fifteen times the weight of an adult African bull
elephant – an animal that consumes 300 to 600 pounds of fodder every 24 hours
and spends up to eighteen hours a day foraging for food! It seems totally out of the
question to imagine this “Supersaurus” feeding itself.
If Brachiosaurus was warm-blooded like an elephant, it might have been unable
to eat enough to keep itself alive! But, even as a cold-blooded animal, there is
doubt that this gargantuan creature could have eaten enough with its small mouth
and teeth. There is just no real solution to this problem if we assume that the earth
has always been the same since life evolved on its surface.
We are taught by orthodox science that the dinosaurs were failures – colossal
failures. There is a litany of “couldn’ts” recited about them. They couldn’t walk on
land because they were too heavy. They couldn’t eat anything but mush because
their heads were too small. They couldn’t run fast because their joints were
imperfect. They couldn’t be warm-blooded because their brains were too small.
They couldn’t compete with smaller, warm-blooded animals.
Yet, when dinosaurs began to emerge as the dominant group, there were many
other species which had equal opportunity to dominate, to win the race for king of
the mountain. For five million years, the dinosaurs were on equal footing with the
other inhabitants of the ecosystem. But then, the dinosaurs showed that they were
the fittest and survived into absolute domination of the globe. During their rule, it
is claimed that there was no non-dinosaur larger than a turkey! They don’t call it
the “age of reptiles” for no reason! The dinosaurs monopolized the planet for 130
million years. As they spread into every area of dominance, they drove out or
destroyed other advanced clans which had also been evolving and adapting for
tens of millions of years. During their long reign, there were other clans that could
have threatened their survival, and each time the dinosaurs showed they were
“firstest with the mostest” in terms of adaptive vigor.
It is posited that the class Mammalia emerged fully defined just as the dinosaurs
began their expansion. But, obviously, for some reason, being a mammal wasn’t
such an advantage during that time. Dinosaurs evolved quickly, changed
repeatedly, and maintained their dominance until some terrible event brought their
rule to an abrupt end. Robert T. Bakker, author of The Dinosaur Heresies, writes:
The sudden extinction of dinosaurs is one of the most popularized topics in
paleontology. Why, after all, did the last dynasties finally end in total extinction? In
reality, however, the dinosaurs’ history contains the drama of much more than a
single death. They suffered three or four major catastrophes during their long
predominance, each one thinning the ranks of the entire clan. And after each such
fall, they recouped their evolutionary fortunes, rising again to fill the terrestrial
system with yet another wave of new species and families of species. The final
complete extermination did not come until sixty-five million years ago, at what
geologists label the ‘Time of Great Dying,’ the greatest evolutionary disaster of all
time… Our view of evolution must take into account the profoundly disorienting
blows struck by the environment during these world-wide extinctions.129
There are many theories put forth to explain these problems but, as is the usual
case with Darwinian thought, they are highly unsatisfactory and leave too many
questions that require fantastic cerebral gymnastics to answer.
Using Occam’s razor, might it not be more reasonable to assume that the earth
was a different place at the time the dinosaurs walked? Just to speculate here, it
might be that they obtained a portion of their nourishment from the act of
breathing itself. Additionally, a different level of gravity would have greatly
reduced the energy needs, and a more salubrious climate would have further
eliminated the energy expenditure for heat regulation. At the same time, a soupier
atmosphere would have shielded the inhabitants of the earth from the harmful
radiation of the sun and would have been more conducive to extensive life spans,
which may have been the means by which the dinosaurs grew to such fantastic
sizes. Bakker also makes an excellent case for the warm-bloodedness of dinosaurs:
No one, either in the nineteenth century or the twentieth, has ever built a persuasive
case proving that dinosaurs as a whole were more like reptilian crocodiles than
warm-blooded birds. No one has done this because it can’t be done… So hundredyear-
old dinosaur theories live on without being questioned, and too often they are
assumed to be totally correct. Even when such a theory is caught in an error, it’s
likely to be excused. […]
Any attempt to analyze the events of the extinction of the dinosaurs runs into the
fundamental difficulties that hinder the investigation of any of these mass murders
of species. Most fossil bones owe their preservation to quick burial by sediment
right after the death of their owner. But generally most spots in the terrestrial
biosphere suffer erosion, not deposition.130

In the present day and time, the causes of cosmic catastrophe are generally
assigned by so-called “alternative researchers” and purveyors of esoteric wisdom
to the idea of Pole Shift. The Pole Shift idea was described as the “ultimate
disaster” by John White in his book appropriately entitled Pole Shift. White listed
numerous psychic prophecies that are clearly describing a Pole Shift and attempted
to relate them to scientific ideas. One source claims that the Hawaiian Islands will
rise and become peaks of a great mountain chain on a new continent that will rise
in the Pacific. Another source predicts that the Hawaiian Islands will sink beneath
the sea. Such contradictions among psychics are often handily explained with the
“branching universe” theory with a twist: both are true, they just refer to different
periods of future history.
As it turned out, most of the psychic predictions analyzed by John White
concerned the period right around the year 2,000. Well, it has come and gone, the
pole didn’t flip, and we are still here.
Naturally, many of the psychics and channels of the space brothers say that we
ought to thank their guides or “guardians” for that fact, since they all pulled
together to keep us from falling into the pit. Nice try, but, as the Cassiopaeans
have said, “Tales are easy to sew/sow, when the past is yours only to know”. And
how true that is.
In the end, the chief problem of all the theories is that of the “trigger
mechanism”. What is driving the machine? What is changing in our solar system
that we may not be told about? Why are the rumormongers and the theorists of
such things as “Planet Nibiru” or “galactic alignment” or “precessional ages”
allowed to promulgate their nonsense, while the real data is being so carefully
The fact that the Earth’s magnetic poles have changed many times in history is
now a well accepted scientific fact. But this actually says nothing at all about the
planet itself “flipping”. It just signifies a reversal of the magnetic field. As we now
know, the Sun reverses its magnetic field regularly and cyclically with no apparent
cataclysmic effects. So, a simple reversal of the magnetic field cannot be used in
support of a physical and literal “Pole Shift”.
In the end, the chief problem of all the “End of the World” theories is that of the
“trigger mechanism”. What is driving the machine?
The most popular theory of the present moment is that of Zecharia Sitchin who
analyzed the myths of the Sumerians, concluding that they referred to a massive
unseen planet, and further, that all of the stories point to a cyclical return at
intervals of 3600 years.
For so many years we have heard about “End of the World” hoaxes and panics
that it is becoming rather tiresome and tedious. When was the last time you heard
about the Photon Belt nonsense? That one was pretty popular for awhile. Kept
everybody going like crazy while dozens of folks made lots of money selling
books and “ascension” courses to help people survive the “enlightening” of the
Well, the “photon belt” apparently fizzled and then the Hale Bopp Frenzy
cranked up leading to some mass suicides and a general air of paranoia all over.

What a lot of people didn’t notice was that there were some extremely strange
things going on here on the Big Blue Marble while Hale Bopp was decorating our
skies – the weather was changing dramatically and Europe experienced what was
called “The Flood of the Millennium”. One has to wonder if the Hale Bopp affair
was not just another form of distraction away from what was really going on – sort
of a Cosmic O.J. Simpson trial?
After Hale Bopp Flopped, the Planet X Panic got its motor warmed up and
Nancy Leider – deluded or a con artist, who can say? – may be facing some
lawsuits for leading people astray with that one. Most certainly, our researches
into secret government mind control projects suggest that Nancy and others are
really not to blame for their lunacy: it is planned and deliberate.
Of course, all the while that was going on, the political world was going crazy
and we are now sitting on a planet that is like a powder keg just waiting for
somebody to casually light a cigarette…
In order to form any ideas about a “trigger”, it is important to try to sort out the
data that we can get and decide if a Pole Shift is even possible and if so, is it a
gradual, Uniformitarian event, or if it is sudden and cataclysmic.
It is commonly accepted among scientists nowadays that there is a “cycle of
extinction.”. However, until recently, they continued to attempt to put it off so far
into the past and future that it could not possibly concern our present civilization.
It is only fairly recently that hints and clues have begun to emerge into public
awareness – a sort of “testing the waters” – though, as usual, there is much back
and forth debate. Generally, those who say that cyclic extinctions DO happen – and
rather frequently – approach the subject from the point of view of collecting and
presenting data. The naysayers generally approach the subject from the point of
view of “explaining away” the data as being “faulty” or “misunderstood”. They
also tend to get emotional and attack the personalities of those who present data.
Still, more and more facts, data, and confirmable information, keep coming to
The relative importance of an idea and the implications of the conclusions that
can be drawn from that idea ought to determine the level of attention given to the
idea. The fact is, the idea that something may be whacking through our solar
system at periodic intervals is a concept of such importance that it simply cannot
be overstated.
The Russians theorized in the 60s that there may be not one, but three planetary
bodies existing in our solar system beyond Pluto. Aberrations in the orbital motion
of Neptune and Uranus have convinced many other scientists that there is a strong
likelihood that some kind of large body exists in solar space beyond Pluto and
exerts strong gravitational attraction on the outermost planets. So we agree with
Sitchin that, if a definite cycle exists, one of the most logical explanations for it is
that it is caused by a planetary-like body making regular, predictable appearances.
But we disagree that such a body travels into the inner solar system.
“If it does exist, and it does reappear cyclically, why doesn’t science know about
it?”, the skeptical reader will ask.
This issue of the cycle of this purported “return” is of the utmost importance; we
find ourselves facing the idea that the world is either due shortly for great geologic
and meteorological events, or it is not. If we consider the remote possibility that

this is going to happen, and if we are interested in human destiny, it behooves us
to investigate whether or not there is a correlation between cyclical geologic
changes in the earth’s past and the future, and what that cycle might be. What is
more, there is also compelling hard scientific evidence that our planet has
relatively recently experienced cataclysmic geological changes. It has only been in
recent years that some of the more convincing evidence of this kind, such as ice
core samples and tree ring analysis, has been revealed.
If we, for one second, think that there is even a one-percent possibility that such
events are cyclic, and that we may be approaching such an event, we ought to be
putting the whole force of all our science and all the great minds of our civilization
into researching the matter. But that does not seem to be the case. Are the leaders
of our nations so stupid that they cannot think that far ahead? Or are they so
greedy and power hungry that they don’t care? Do they intend to “get while the
getting’s good”, and then when – and IF – the final curtain comes down, they will
think that they were the stars of the show? This poses a peculiar problem. How do
we assess who really knows what?
Over and over again, as we have pushed deeper and deeper into our research, we
find that investigating these matters is problematic for a lot of reasons. On the
surface, what we see is that academic and professional geologists, glaciologists,
geophysicists, paleontologists, oceanographers, astronomers, astrophysicists,
physicists, mathematicians, archaeologists, and so on, do not take kindly to
intrusions into their private little worlds. They have their gods of convention,
whom they worship, and god forbid that anyone should criticize the acceptable
protocols of the conventional interpretation. They are warm and safe and their
career is protected by their covenant with the scientific Thought Police who are, in
turn, high priests to the Control System.
And this is where we discover the problem. The Control System, via the offices
of its high priests of science, ensures that glaciologists do not cross over into
astrophysics and that geologists do not cross over into archaeology. In this way,
there is no such thing as Comparative Science, and this is most especially true in
the United States where the lines between disciplines are most strongly
demarcated, patrolled, and enforced by the Scientific Thought Police.
These conditions bring our problem into sharp focus. As we have attempted to
get to the very bottom of many of the claims of the experts in the various fields,
we have discovered that there is much data that is completely suppressed by this
system. There is also a great deal of data that falls under the control of government
agencies, and access to it is severely limited. I discovered that there is, indeed, an
effort on the part of various government agencies to investigate these cyclical
returns and cometary impact matters, but that the results are generally unavailable
to the public. They consist of technical papers, stored on microfiche, buried in
research and special collections sections of university libraries. Some of it makes
its way into print, but the volumes are so costly that the researcher in these fields
must be well financed to be able to afford them. Those things that make it to print
in technical journals are couched in such amazingly obtuse and opaque
terminology that one must be as sharp as a Damascus sword to cut through the
nonsense. And it is almost a given that only a trained scientist who knows the
“hidden jargon” will be able to decipher the code.

I must also tell the reader that, for weeks on end, as we have ordered and read
technical papers, books, files of data, reports and so forth, the enormity of the
problem of suppression of information has become overwhelmingly evident.
Every night, after a long day of analysis, calculations, plugging numbers into
formulas and compiling results, we would prepare for bed, both of us shaking our
heads and muttering over and over again: “lies, lies, lies; nothing but lies.”
COINTELPRO everywhere.
And so it is. Not only are the separate scientific disciplines most often unaware
of developments in other fields which may have important data that would help
their own studies, they are also conditioned — programmed — to consider it
scientific blasphemy to compare their own conclusion with the data from other
fields. And somebody is controlling this system of suppression.
The terrestrial axis is currently inclined at 23.5 degrees. The early Greek
philosophers viewed this tilt as an “irregular condition”, and not something that
had been fixed since the beginning. Anaxagoras wrote:
In the beginning the stars moved in the sky as in a revolving dome, so that the
celestial pole, which is always visible, was vertically overhead; but subsequently
the pole took its inclined position.
Hesiod discussed the cyclical conception of time in his Works and Days, saying
that the human race had five ages: Gold, Silver, Bronze, Heroic, and Iron. The
Heroic age is seen by many scholars as an addition to an earlier scheme meant to
accommodate Greek history. During the first of these ages, mankind lived under
the rule of Kronos, or Saturn, and was on friendly terms with the gods, and was
free from hard work, pain, and old age. Plato wrote about a periodic reversal of the
rotation of “the world”, probably meaning the entire “cosmic machine”, rather
than just the planet, as being the cause of the end of one age and the beginning of
another. He tells us that all the stories of the changes in the rising and setting of
the sun and planets originate from the same event in cosmic history: the usurpation
of the rule of Chronos by Zeus.
When God was shepherd there were no political constitutions and no taking of
wives and begetting of children. For all men rose up anew into life out of the earth,
having no memory of the former things. Instead they had fruits without stint from
trees and bushes; these needed no cultivation but sprang up of themselves out of the
ground without man’s toil. For the most part they disported themselves in the open
needing neither clothing nor couch, for the seasons were blended evenly so as to
work them no hurt, and the grass which sprang up out of the earth in abundance
made a soft bed for them.99

But this age came to a close and the gods of that age gave up their benevolent
governance, turning the rule of the world over to something “other”. Plato
describes the close of the era in terms of Pole Shift:
The gods of the provinces, who had ruled under the greatest god, knew at once
what was happening and relinquished the oversight of their regions. A shudder
passed through the world at the reversing of its rotation, checked as it was between
the old control and the new impulse which had turned end into beginning for it and
beginning into end. This shock set up a great quaking, which caused — in this crisis
of the world just as in the former one — destruction of living creatures of all kinds.
Then, after the interval needed for its recovery, it gained relief at last from its
clamors and confusion, and attaining quiet after great upheaval it returned to its
ordered course and continued in it, having control and government of itself and of
all within it.
Herodotus seems to be quoting from the same source that Plato utilized when he
Thus in the period of eleven thousand three hundred and forty years they said that
there had arisen no god in human form; nor even before that time or afterwards
among the remaining kings who arose in Egypt, did they report that anything of that
kind had come to pass. In this time they said that the sun had moved four times
from his accustomed place of rising, and where he now sets he had thence twice
had his rising, and in the place from whence he now rises he had twice had his
setting; and in the meantime nothing in Egypt had been changed from its usual
state, neither that which comes from the earth nor that which comes to them from
the river nor that which concerns diseases or deaths.101
Both Herodotus and Plato are explicit in saying that the phenomenon is dual
natured, that something happens “out there” in the Solar system and the results on
the earth are cataclysmic. Herodotus says that it happened four times in an 11,500-
year period, and Plato says that it is an ever-recurring phenomenon.
Modern interpreters of these passages generally divide into two groups: the
catastrophists and the uniformitarians. The catastrophists suggest that the
description is that of a literal 180-degree flip of the earth. The Uniformitarians like
to talk in terms of “world ages” according to the “Precession of the Zodiac”.

One of the oft-reiterated themes of Fulcanelli is that the “ancient Greeks” — not
the Egyptians — were the source of the Hermetic science.92
Timaeus and Critias, written by Plato some time around 360 BC93 are the only
existing written records which specifically refer to Atlantis. The dialogues are
conversations between Socrates, Hermocrates, Timaeus, and Critias. Apparently in
response to a prior talk by Socrates about ideal societies, Timaeus and Critias
agree to entertain Socrates with a tale that is “not a fiction but a true story”.
The story is about the conflict between the ancient Athenians and the Atlanteans
9000 years before Plato’s time. Knowledge of the ancient times was apparently
forgotten by the Athenians of Plato’s day, and the form the story of Atlantis took
in Plato’s account was that Egyptian priests conveyed it to Solon. Solon passed the
tale to Dropides, the great-grandfather of Critias. Critias learned of it from his
grandfather also named Critias, son of Dropides. Let’s take a careful look at the
main section of the story, omitting the introduction that describes Solon going to
Egypt and chatting up the priests.
Thereupon one of the priests, who was of a very great age, said: O Solon, Solon,
you Hellenes are never anything but children, and there is not an old man among
you. Solon in return asked him what he meant. I mean to say, he replied, that in
mind you are all young; there is no old opinion handed down among you by ancient
tradition, nor any science, which is hoary with age. And I will tell you why.
There have been, and will be again, many destructions of mankind arising out of
many causes; the greatest have been brought about by the agencies of fire and
water, and other lesser ones by innumerable other causes. There is a story, which
even you have preserved, that once upon a time Phaeton, the son of Helios, having
yoked the steeds in his father’s chariot, because he was not able to drive them in the
path of his father, burnt up all that was upon the earth, and was himself destroyed
by a thunderbolt. Now this has the form of a myth, but really signifies a declination
of the bodies moving in the heavens around the earth, and a great conflagration of
things upon the earth, which recurs after long intervals; at such times those who
live upon the mountains and in dry and lofty places are more liable to destruction
than those who dwell by rivers or on the seashore. And from this calamity the Nile,
who is our never-failing saviour, delivers and preserves us.
When, on the other hand, the gods purge the earth with a deluge of water, the
survivors in your country are herdsmen and shepherds who dwell on the mountains,
but those who, like you, live in cities are carried by the rivers into the sea. Whereas
One of the threads we follow is that of these “ancient Greeks” and who they really were. We will cover this material partly in this discussion, but for full explication, the reader may wish to obtain copies of future volumes in this series as they become available.

in this land, neither then nor at any other time, does the water come down from
above on the fields, having always a tendency to come up from below; for which
reason the traditions preserved here are the most ancient. The fact is, that wherever
the extremity of winter frost or of summer does not prevent, mankind exist,
sometimes in greater, sometimes in lesser numbers. And whatever happened either
in your country or in ours, or in any other region of which we are informed – if
there were any actions noble or great or in any other way remarkable, they have all
been written down by us of old, and are preserved in our temples.
We want to here make note of the fact that present day evidence suggests that it
is true both that Egypt has been inundated and that it experienced a rainy climate.
Fulcanelli even commented upon the inundation of Egypt. This leads us to
question whether or not this story actually came from the mouth of a true Egyptian
priest with the full knowledge of the ancient cataclysms. If so, he would have
known of the period of heavy rain and shallow seas in Egypt, by which the Sphinx
and other monuments were eroded, and which deposited a layer of salt on the
interior of the pyramids and other structures. And so we suggest, to reconcile this
difficulty, not that the story is false — because Fulcanelli has told us to “have faith
in the account of Plato” — but rather that the speaker was not aware of certain
ideas specifically relating to Egypt, and that the dialogue has been put into the
mouth of an Egyptian priest in order to preserve it in the context of the then
current “Egyptian craze”. It might even be thought that this was a deliberate
exoteric “blind”.
Whereas just when you and other nations are beginning to be provided with letters
and the other requisites of civilized life, after the usual interval, the stream from
heaven, like a pestilence, comes pouring down, and leaves only those of you who
are destitute of letters and education; and so you have to begin all over again like
children, and know nothing of what happened in ancient times, either among us or
among yourselves. As for those genealogies of yours which you just now recounted
to us, Solon, they are no better than the tales of children.

In the first place you remember a single deluge only, but there were many previous
ones; in the next place, you do not know that there formerly dwelt in your land the
fairest and noblest race of men which ever lived, and that you and your whole city
are descended from a small seed or remnant of them which survived. And this was
unknown to you, because, for many generations, the survivors of that destruction
died, leaving no written word. For there was a time, Solon, before the great deluge
of all, when the city which now is Athens was first in war and in every way the best
governed of all cities, is said to have performed the noblest deeds and to have had
the fairest constitution of any of which tradition tells, under the face of heaven.
Again, let’s interrupt the dialogue to point out that it is hardly likely that a priest
of Egypt would have declared the Athenians to be “the fairest and noblest race of
men”, nor that they “performed the noblest deeds” and had the “fairest constitution
… under the face of heaven”! Another clue that the speaker is giving us that it is
NOT Egypt that is the source of this information – at least not Egypt as we know it
Solon marveled at his words, and earnestly requested the priests to inform him
exactly and in order about these former citizens. You are welcome to hear about
them, Solon, said the priest, both for your own sake and for that of your city, and
above all, for the sake of the goddess who is the common patron and parent and
educator of both our cities. She founded your city a thousand years before ours,
receiving from the Earth and Hephaestus the seed of your race, and afterwards she
founded ours, of which the constitution is recorded in our sacred registers to be
eight thousand years old.
Yet again, the Egyptian priest is giving greater antiquity to the Greeks than to
the Egyptians! Another clue for the reader to understand that this is not an
Egyptian story! What is being said is being put in the mouth of an Egyptian priest
to “conceal”. Indeed, the worship of the goddess, is the older form of worship in
Egypt. But all of that came to an end, probably with the conquest of Narmer, the
building of the temple to Hephaestus, the demoting of the goddess and the Moon
calendar, and the instituting of the Solar worship and the solar calendar of 365
As touching your citizens of nine thousand years ago, I will briefly inform you of
their laws and of their most famous action; the exact particulars of the whole we
will hereafter go through at our leisure in the sacred registers themselves. If you
compare these very laws with ours you will find that many of ours are the
counterpart of yours as they were in the olden time.
Here, of course, we come to the idea that there was an ancient connection and
communication between the truly “old Egyptians” and the Northern peoples.
Georges Gurdjieff once remarked that Christianity was taken from Egypt, a
statement that might suggest that he agreed with the Pan-Egyptian school. But no:
Christianity, he hastened to explain, was not taken from the Egypt of history, but
from a “far older Egypt” which is unrecorded.
In the first place, there is the caste of priests, which is separated from all the others;
next, there are the artificers, who ply their several crafts by themselves and do not
intermix; and also there is the class of shepherds and of hunters, as well as that of
husbandmen; and you will observe, too, that the warriors in Egypt are distinct from
all the other classes, and are commanded by the law to devote themselves solely to
military pursuits; moreover, the weapons which they carry are shields and spears, a
style of equipment which the goddess taught of Asiatics first to us, as in your part
of the world first to you.
The remark that the right function of society was “first taught to the Asiatics” is
most interesting. The reference to “Asiatics” in this context from an historical
“Egyptian Priest” is extremely questionable because, in the many Egyptian
inscriptions of historical times, the Asiatics are always referred to as “Vile”.
Nevertheless, even in historical times, it is indeed true that the Egyptians borrowed
their military equipment and war strategies from the Asiatics, but that was a much

later development than the above story would suggest. The issue of who the “vile
Asiatics” were is an ongoing debate, but it seems to devolve on such as the
Hittites, Hyksos, and other Indo-European tribes that came down from the Steppes
in various waves. We will discuss, further on, the evidence that the Steppe peoples
were the worshippers of the goddess in the most ancient times, and that the war
god, the weather god, the god of fire and the mountains, was introduced later from
the South.
Then as to wisdom, do you observe how our law from the very first made a study of
the whole order of things, extending even to prophecy and medicine which gives
health, out of these divine elements deriving what was needful for human life, and
adding every sort of knowledge which was akin to them. All this order and
arrangement the goddess first imparted to you when establishing your city; and she
chose the spot of earth in which you were born, because she saw that the happy
temperament of the seasons in that land would produce the wisest of men.
Wherefore the goddess, who was a lover both of war and of wisdom, selected and
first of all settled that spot which was the most likely to produce men likest herself.
And there you dwelt, having such laws as these and still better ones, and excelled
all mankind in all virtue, as became the children and disciples of the gods.
Again and again, this very strange “Egyptian” priest is saying things that
completely contradict the more “historical” Egyptian view that they are the most
“ancient and noble race”. In the above remarks, he has said that the goddess
imparted to the Greeks first all of the laws of health and those things needed to
preserve and prolong life. The Greeks are pronounced to have been the “wisest of
men”, and those “most like the goddess” herself. And again “excelled all mankind
in all virtue”, which is not very likely to have been said by an Egyptian priest.
Many great and wonderful deeds are recorded of your state in our histories. But one
of them exceeds all the rest in greatness and valour. For these histories tell of a
mighty power which unprovoked made an expedition against the whole of Europe
and Asia, and to which your city put an end. This power came forth out of the
Atlantic Ocean, for in those days the Atlantic was navigable; and there was an
island situated in front of the straits which are by you called the Pillars of Heracles;
the island was larger than Libya and Asia put together, and was the way to other
islands, and from these you might pass to the whole of the opposite continent which
surrounded the true ocean; for this sea which is within the Straits of Heracles is
only a harbour, having a narrow entrance, but that other is a real sea, and the
surrounding land may be most truly called a boundless continent.
Now in this island of Atlantis there was a great and wonderful empire, which had
rule over the whole island and several others, and over parts of the continent, and,
furthermore, the men of Atlantis had subjected the parts of Libya within the
columns of Heracles as far as Egypt, and of Europe as far as Tyrrhenia. This vast
power, gathered into one, endeavoured to subdue at a blow our country and yours
and the whole of the region within the straits; and then, Solon, your country shone
forth, in the excellence of her virtue and strength, among all mankind. She was preeminent
in courage and military skill, and was the leader of the Hellenes. And when
the rest fell off from her, being compelled to stand alone, after having undergone
the very extremity of danger, she defeated and triumphed over the invaders, and
preserved from slavery those who were not yet subjugated, and generously
liberated all the rest of us who dwell within the pillars.

Of all the things the “Egyptian priest” has said, the above is the most astonishing
and the most telling. Again he is giving pre-eminence to the Greeks, that they
performed the most heroic deed of all times, which was to defeat the Atlantean
Empire! And this is the point that is so often just simply overlooked by all the
Atlantis lovers! Atlantis was the original “evil empire of the Borg”! And what is
more, in this passage, the clue is given that the ancient Egyptian civilization — the
pyramids and other monumental architecture upon which so much of the current
Egyptian craze is based, stemming from the work of Schwaller de Lubicz, and
which is declared to be the offspring of Atlantis – the ancient Egypt that is so
admired by the current day flock of Egyptophiles – was very likely an attempt to
re-construct the EVIL EMPIRE OF ATLANTIS! In other words, the “priestly
science” of the Egyptians, referred to by Fulcanelli, antedated the material so
diligently studied and propagated by Schwaller and others for “clues” to
alchemical secrets and methods of “ascension”.
But afterwards there occurred violent earthquakes and floods; and in a single day
and night of misfortune all your warlike men in a body sank into the earth, and the
island of Atlantis in like manner disappeared in the depths of the sea. For which
reason the sea in those parts is impassable and impenetrable, because there is a
shoal of mud in the way; and this was caused by the subsidence of the island.
I have told you briefly, Socrates, what the aged Critias heard from Solon and
related to us. And when you were speaking yesterday about your city and citizens,
the tale which I have just been repeating to you came into my mind, and I remarked
with astonishment how, by some mysterious coincidence, you agreed in almost
every particular with the narrative of Solon; but I did not like to speak at the
moment. For a long time had elapsed, and I had forgotten too much; I thought that I
must first of all run over the narrative in my own mind, and then I would speak.
Here we find another interesting clue. Critias has just told us that Socrates was
discussing the very things that are included in this story — that everything
Socrates had been saying the previous day “agreed in almost every particular with
the narrative of Solon”. Apparently, this story had been handed down via another
line of transmission.
And so I readily assented to your request yesterday, considering that in all such
cases the chief difficulty is to find a tale suitable to our purpose, and that with such
a tale we should be fairly well provided. And therefore, as Hermocrates has told
you, on my way home yesterday I at once communicated the tale to my companions
as I remembered it; and after I left them, during the night by thinking I recovered
nearly the whole it. Truly, as is often said, the lessons of our childhood make
wonderful impression on our memories; for I am not sure that I could remember all
the discourse of yesterday, but I should be much surprised if I forgot any of these
things which I have heard very long ago. I listened at the time with childlike
interest to the old man’s narrative; he was very ready to teach me, and I asked him
again and again to repeat his words, so that like an indelible picture they were
branded into my mind.
As soon as the day broke, I rehearsed them as he spoke them to my companions,
that they, as well as myself, might have something to say. And now, Socrates, to
make an end my preface, I am ready to tell you the whole tale. I will give you not
only the general heads, but the particulars, as they were told to me.

The city and citizens, which you yesterday described to us in fiction, we will now
transfer to the world of reality. It shall be the ancient city of Athens, and we will
suppose that the citizens whom you imagined, were our veritable ancestors, of
whom the priest spoke; they will perfectly harmonise, and there will be no
inconsistency in saying that the citizens of your republic are these ancient
Athenians. Let us divide the subject among us, and all endeavour according to our
ability gracefully to execute the task which you have imposed upon us. Consider
then, Socrates, if this narrative is suited to the purpose, or whether we should seek
for some other instead.
And we come to the final understanding that conveys to us the secret of the story
of Atlantis: that it did not actually come from an Egyptian priest, but that this was
a story that was created to “execute the task which you [Socrates] have imposed
upon us”, which was to veil in fiction something that was Truth. Does this mean
that they were “making it up”? No, indeed. It means that they were attempting to
find a vehicle for the history that would insure its preservation.
Thus we come to the conclusion that it is entirely possible that the story was not
given to Solon by an Egyptian priest, but that it was attributed to same because at
the time everyone was convinced of the antiquity of the Egyptians. It was as much
a fad then as now, due to the presence of the pyramids and other monuments. If
Fulcanelli is correct about the cult of the dead of the Egyptians being a distortion
of this knowledge, and this cult was encouraged, supported, and furthered by the
Egyptian elite of the past several thousand years, then it is almost a certainty that
they were not in possession of the knowledge that was conveyed to Solon. But it
seems apparent that he did, indeed, get it from somewhere. And he tells us that the
Greeks were instructed by the Arabs which certainly makes us wonder who were
the original “Arabs” since the time referred to was long before Abraham and his
son Ishmael, the alleged “father of the Arabs”.
Getting back to Fulcanelli and Hendaye and primitive Chiliasm, let us take the
hint from some comments made by an old man in Florence who was speaking to
Mark Hedsel, recorded in his book The Zelator, which will save us a lot of grief:
…[S]ometimes even Fulcanelli wraps his mysteries in mysteries, for he knows that
some things may not be spoken, even today. […] Fulcanelli is far wiser than most
of his readers know. He sets down less in words than he could, and delivers
parables in parables. In this there is real wisdom. The alchemists insisted that one
should heat the retort many times before making the final distillation. This is an
emblem of true thought: one must pass one’s thinking through the furnace many
times, to be sure. One should think with a hammer, rather than with a brain, as one
shapes our thought from dross matter.
As though imitating the hammer blows of Vulcan, he tapped his stick on top of the
balustrade. “Iron, you see. Cast iron. Yet it looks like stone. That is the true
Philosopher’s Stone, which never appears to be what it is. […] There are deeper
secrets in stone than in iron.”
The reader will be far more aware of what it means to “think with a hammer,
rather than with a brain” by the time they are finished with this discussion. But for
the moment, suffice it to say that the old master is pointing out that until a certain
“initiation” has occurred in terms of achieving mental mastery over the tracks of
emotional thinking (and nearly all thinking is emotional, no matter how logical it
may seem), there is no possibility of understanding Fulcanelli. Further, this
process of “rewiring” the brain by deliberate hammer blows of the will against the
programmed circuits is the “heating of the crucible” of the alchemical
transformation — the thing that produces the “stone”, a particular “state” that
comes to exist in the brain of the individual who has repeatedly “hammered” their
thinking, producing what the ancients called the “magnetic center”.
